.17HMR
« on: November 08, 2006, 08:37:25 AM »
A guy wants me to take him fox hunting in an area he says is loaded with fox. He only has a 12 gauge and I said bring it. He is worried that I wont be able to get them that close. I havent seen the terrain but he says it is all fields. Anyway wondering if a .17hmr would be to small for fox. I will be carrying the .222/20 so if a yote pops up I can take it. Just wondering about the .17hmr?
thanks

For fox the 17HMR is fine, kinda light for coyote.

I just bought a CZ 17HMR today. I put a 4x12x50 scope on it. Its a short heavy barrel fluted model with a set trigger. Should be good for areas i can't use centerfire. Should be fine for coons, fox and groundhogs. We will see what it does on coyote.

archerobx.....

the 17HMR will work fine...i suggest though he use the 20gr bullets not the 17gr V-Max...and zeroed dead nutz at 50yds.

good luck guys!

Shoot the 17HMR today. 50 yard groups under a dime. 100 yard groups are around a quarter in size.

glad it shot good.
here is the article about the 5mm.
It is a 22 mag necked down to a 20 caliber.
In between the 22 mag,and the 17hmr.
I dont see it much better than either or.

wow posted it like 3 years ago.

he bailed on the hunt so never tried it out. Have taken many hogs with it and a couple coon.  Have alot of yotes out here so I wouldnt risk bringing  the hmr out.

I live in Montgomery Co. so I'm restricted to my T/C Encore in 12ga.  I was hoping the .17hmr would work on coyotes with a well placed head shot.

The 17 Hmr works great on fox, stops them in there tracks and no pelt damage.I definitly wouldn't want to risk it on coyotes. Its hard to find an ideal caliber for every situation.I have no experence with the 22 hornet but have heard good things about it.

Swarter 2, I killed one coyote with a 17hmr in November. 60 yard shot right threw the windpipe. He ran for about 50 yards and checked out. It is light but if thats all you can hunt with because of the law, it will work. Just place your shot. I've also killed 3 fox's with a 17hmr in the last 3 weeks. All were about 100 yards. They ran about 25 yards and expired. Once again, do your best at placing your shot.

17 grain hollow points. That is an amazing little round. I've killed several groundhogs and many coons with it. I have not shot to much past 100 yards but within that range it will get it done. It does not have the impact a larger round has but the lead frags nice. make sure the wind is not over 15 mph or it will blow off course.
