I was out this weekend and had coyotes sounding off to group howls and lone male and female howls.

You mean using coyote sounds is the same as using a turkey calls to call turkey. As long as you talk the critters language they will talk back... Interesting.....

Lookn2locate, I've used about the same sounds as you over the years.
Around home, I don't try to locate. Because I've scouted and have an idea they are in the area.
If home area goes sour, I then may try to locate to see where they have moved. Now a days I have siren sound on my e-caller that I use to locate. Can't say it's my favorite. But I use it.

If I go to new territory and don't have time to scout on foot, I may try to locate.
For the most part, I don't try to locate on new territory. I just try to hunt on the blind on unfamiliar territory, because am here now and may not come back.
What am getting at, I don't locate too often, but use that time to take a chase and call to see what happens. That may be a disadvantage to me.
I do see the value in locating. Hearing Coyotes, then planning where to park truck, plan approach & set up would be an advantage in new spots.

Good information, I know you said this, but I would like to stress that piont. Boots on the ground scouting will up your kills better then any other method. Also the bonus is you will learn about coyotes habbits. All kinds of locating methods work but learning the area coyotes live in the best. There is no easy one way method to hunt coyotes in Pa. Locating with coyote sounds is hit or miss in locating. They do not always respond and you can pass up just as many good spots thinking there are none there. Coyotes get real smart from the truck loads of people already doing that locating with coyote sounds.

  Sound advice for sure. I am a Marshmallow Mountain Man myself.     I like the tried and proven talk to the Old Coots in the area method..Lady at the Inn where we stayed told us where she heard them... I just spent 2 days in the heart of "LookN2Bsignificants" Honey Hole.. .. got some Fisher trapping locations and some coyote hot spots for me and the Goose to try out.... ...better get there early Sonny!  .....................................   PS: For sure use the Ranten Woodpecker along with Gray Fox distress full volume till the batteries die..

So you think.    I actually do very little locating but wanted to hear what everyone does.  Boots on the ground is also great but the time to do that is not the day you are hunting or even the night before.  It is sorta an all year thing.

I think as Hern stated though it is hard to put boots on the ground often enough when your main hunting area is 4 hours away. That being said if you do it long enough, you get to know the general areas the animals prefer and at what times of the year.

My next question is what sound do you use that gets the coyotes to sound off the most and what is your best sound to seal the deal?

  Well for question 1...I will answer with a question.  Why does he have to sound off, he just has to come. Question #2 to seal the deal it's "BANG"....us OLD guys use the KISS method....

OK, let me explain for those who can't comprehend.

1) No they don't have to sound off.  Of the ones that do, what sound do you get the most vocal response from while hunting?

2) When you know you are working a coyote that is close but you can't put eyes on him (hung up), what sound is your go to sound that brings them in close enough for a visual and shot?

Now if you understand what I am saying please respond honestly and to the point.  Trust me, you are not giving away the code to launch a nuclear missile.

Aaaaa, Jasper1 looks like your son is looking for every ones secrets methods to kill coyotes. He says It,s not rocket science!! But it must be right up there next to launching a bullet.

Tim    Legitimate question.  A few weeks ago I had them sounding off.  A short time later, a coyote sounded off again and he was close.  Just over the crest and wouldn't show his eyes.  Had another one come in and just stayed in the high golden rod.  It went back and forth vocalizing.  As exciting as it was,  it wouldn't break cover for me.  Both times I'd say the coyote was within 50 yards......  No shot and never seen it.    One time I was in the woods  the other time I was in a field.
