interesting stand today
« on: March 06, 2015, 03:24:48 PM »
Went out today to a piece of game lands where their deer pit is.walking in the mile walk seen 12 deer knew animals where moved saw few sets of dog tracks heading back the freshly plowed road.at this point was feeling good thinking hole walk back where to set what calls to use .laid it all out in my head wind was good little noisey walking but I took my time tried to be as quieter as possible. Got to the pit absolutely covered in yote tracks one was huge size a a tennis ball biggest I've seen.place my hellfire just behind the pit on snowbank covered it with white pillow case.then I positioned my self about 50yards away with slight cross wind towards where I just walked in.waited 10 mins.let out female long howl just one.about 15 SEC's later I heard 2 short barks and a short aggesive howl.probly 700 TO 1000 yards away up the hill not knowing what them yotes are saying yet I hit em back with answer howl(shrugz)  more barks and short howls.then I did nothing for probly 8 to 10 mins thinking to myself maybe they where challenge howling me so I let 2 challenge howls out back to back they again answered me the same but by this time they seemed to be half the distant they were so I shut up for a few mins by now I am at the 25 min mark I was thinking I am going to close the deal finally.now in this spot the farthest I can see is maybe 100 yards tops.all of a sudden I hear a god awful sound coming Dow the freshly plowed road which is about 50 yards down to my left I look here comes a guy dragging an ice fishing sled.but he don't just walk past to the lake he takes a detour off the main road up the short road to the deer pit where my call is.guess was curious what was in the pit while looking in the pit he lights a cigeret.so I raised my volume to 20 put on male long howl and let it rip while he is about 10 feet from the call.I swear he has new design in his under wear.needles to say didn't close the deal so when smokey left I grabbed my called and jetted saw few more deer on my way out.was exciting hunt anyway. Gotta love gamelans hunting.

Neat story.
Mine wasn't so weird. I called a pair in this morning and didn't get a shot. I don't think it was me but something wasn't right for them. They seem skittish or spooked from the start. They didn't get within 150-200 years. No shots fired.
Did see a Raccoon around 10:05 this morning when driving to another set.

I realize the "intruder" blew your set up,  but I think I would have stayed for an hour or so, just to see if the curious coyotes may have lurked in the shadows out of curiosity and showed themselves.  I would have perhaps played a pup distress for only a minute or so after the guy left, just to give the coyotes something to think about.....then wait to see if curiosity gets the best of them and they come in to check things out "after the fact".

I agree with Misterjake. Pup distress has been getting them fired up in my area.  It's definitely something to put into your bag of tricks.

I never leave a stand without using pup distress last. I've had them come in to that and I know they heard my previous calls. Some sets that's all I use and when they come in to that  be ready cause there on rocket fuel!

good advice on the pup distress..I'm not 100% on coyote vocals either but they may have potentially busted you or were leery of something..perhaps the ice fisherman coming.. maybe they detected him before you did..those sounds may have been threat barks/howls??
