Irony

You've got to love the irony of going out calling....then coming home and finding fox tracks in your backyard.

Cruel....but funny.

So why was he there and were did he come from is the question.  Was there more then one? That is the should be  just some of the question. Was the same thing happing were you were hunting.

Comes from the woods on the other side of the field (posted). Sniffs around out back, I could see where he was digging a few spots, I'm guessing for mice.

Safety Zone problem in my backyard. I have a spot about a 1/4 mile away that's ok, I call that. I've taken a couple out of there but it's a tough spot to get the wind right and also make safety zone.

Shovelheadave, I have a few hanging around our house too.
But I do feed 'em for 4 or 5 months during the winter. I tend a bait station out back and that's cool to watch. Never called or trapped at are property, just like to have them around, I guess. Every year, I tell myself I gotta put some traps back there. Maybe next year.
One thing about a bait station in the back yard, I can see when they are worked. The past two weeks, the snow has piled up and no backyard visits. This indicates Fox don't sleep close by or found another food source or unknown factor. I have other bait stations, in 2 different counties, that are being visited.
Shovelheadave, If you can't hunt 'em out back, just feed 'em in hopes they have big litters come spring.

I started this off just to laugh about it but you got me thinking and I'm wondering if we might have stumbled into an something.

I'm figuring the area I can call is a 1/4 mile from my house.....but, google earth says it's 2,260 ft....almost a 1/2 mile.

Talking to Ernie a while back, he's (if I remember correctly) figuring you can call a fox for about a 1/2 mile. Getting to the woods line behind my house.....I'm over a 1/2 mile. If I'm lip squeaking behind the house and get eyes coming out of the woods then I scamper over to my spot, they might be out of range.

Just go over there and call. Do not come up with these trick ideas. Way over thinking things.

AMEN!  When calling your playing checkers not chess.

Coyotejohn, That is the most profound statement I ever heard on this site.
Thank You

That's a darn good analogy.

I do look at it like a chess match.....maybe I should start thinking about it like checkers.

them seasoned callers got it figured out.  I like johns analogy as well

Ok
I realy like Johns statement but this kind of stuff is why people can not get better.  Great statement for the guys that know what is going on in predator hunting. But to the novice hunter?

A lot of people ask me what is the most important part for calling predators and I tell em they need to be there and they think im being an Ahole.  Just because it looks like a good spot doesn't mean a animal is going to magically appear.  Dave kaprocki's book is probably the best calling book I have read about setups and how to work a canine in.  I scout make sure the animals are there.  Then setup so the wind and topography helps me out.  But sometimes the animal doesn't follow the rules but that's just the nature of the beast.  the right sound is low on the priority list in my opinion but others opinions may vary.
