New Tikka T3! Need Help
« on: June 14, 2012, 02:57:04 PM »
Hey guys i bought a Tikka T3 in a .223. I bought superformance ammo to use and sight in. I cannot get my rifle to sight in. It is all over the paper. The scope is tight to the rings. I clean the rifle out. Do you guys have any suggestions? What is your thought about using the tikka? Has anyone had problems before?

When you say all over the paper, what distance are you shooting and what type groups are you getting?  Are you shooting supported from a bench?  Try different ammo?  If it's seriously effed up groups and you are sure the rings are tight to the gun, try a different scope.  If you are getting the same results it may be the barrel.

I wasted about 150 bullets a lb or two of powder and primers trying to get a .243 to shoot and it was the scope.  a leupold at that.  if you know its not you then I would first try another brand of ammo.  I like black hills which shot moa in my tikka m595 varminter.  both the 50gr vmax and the 55gr sp blue box seconds.  I couldn't get hornady to shoot out of my gun except reloads.  I get .375 groups at 100yds with 50 gr vmax loaded to 3300 fps.

  • Make sure you are using quality rings and bases.  Test to make sure all the screws are nice and snug(not too tight).  Gunsmith torque wrenches are the ticket.
  • I agree with BigBen.  I could be your scope.  Try a different optic.  I had a Mueller scope that wouldn't hold zero or track right.  My point of impact would change between shots.  I switched scopes and the problem vanished.
  • Try several different brands of ammunition and bullet types.  Some rifle barrels are very finicky with the types of bullets they like.

try and find the rate of twist for the rifle.  that will help you with choosing a bullet weight.  but it could very well be the scope.

Heard great things about Tikka...congratulations on your new gun!  I bought a used HOWA 1500 in .243 that absolutely would not shoot despite tons of different ammo.  Called HOWA and talked to them about it and they traded it in for a new HOWA 1500.  Guess what...that gun could not shoot better than a 2 1/2 group at 100 yards.  Sold it and never bought a HOWA again.  I know others have em and say these Japanese guns shoot.

Let the gun cool between shots.  A hot barrell can defiintely affect accuracy.
