Old School Meets New School
« on: November 24, 2011, 11:45:30 PM »
Last year I got a XLR 250 and hunted with it as both a scanning and shooting light.  It was hard holding it in one hand as a shooting light and shooting with the other.  So this year I decided to invest in a second light for scanning the XLR 100.  Well I put the 250 on the gun and expected the 100 to be here in the mail Wednesday.  It didn't show so I figured I wouldn't hunt tonight.  Then I remembered my "old school" light built for me by John Dancey before the Kill Lights arrived on the scene.  John did a fantastic job building this light and many fox fell to it.   The battery still had a charge but I put it on the charger for fiteeen minutes then headed out.

I've been trying to save my spots to guide others to but tonight I had the itch and decided I would give two spots a try.  I fully expected to get a fox at the first set as it has not been hunted all year and always produces.  Well the wind was wrong and nothing showed.

Second spot I walked out into a cut soybean field and when I got about 100 yards out I put on the scanning light and caught fox eyes 60 yards away.  Started lip squeeking and the fox committed and came into 40 yards then began to head sideways to catch my wind.  Well I got him to stop and the .17 Fireball put him down.  Unfortunately, I caught the spine and ruined the pelt.

Just wanted to share this hunt because it was special to me given the old school meeting new school lighting systems.  You know what...they both worked exceptionally well!

Gotta love that.  Congrats.
"Predators are either active & feeding, semi-active & callable, or utterly inactive & then practically speaking, no call is needed; we're just taking our guns for a walk. We can & should get used to it, & follow their leed cuz they just ain't eager nor apt to follow our’s any time soon!
