Modified 17 hmr load
« on: March 28, 2011, 08:01:41 PM »
I don't know a lot about reloading but was wondering if it would be possible to but a 25 grain bullet in a 17 hmr casing? What would be the problems or concerns with doing that and what type of powder should be used?Could you use the same powder charge as a factory 20 grain load ?

Here is one of our members that took the 22 WMR rimfire and did some experimenting... Don't know anything about rimfires...or  17 HMR since I use the 17 Center fire... I do know that http://www.midwayusa.com/ does sale  20 grain Dogtown .172 bullets... They are a lot smaller in length then the 25 grain Hornady.. I have done some reloading for my 17 Fireball with them but have yet to shoot them.  Could be that this bullet would work for you in the 17 HMR. ??????????

To be honest I would not even play around with pulling bullets in a rimfire... That is just me... I don't know enough to even play around with rimfires...The thing would probably go off and it just ain't worth it IMO for safety sake...
However if you don't know much abour reloading I would not even try to attempt this.. I have seen people set off rimfire by just dropping ar rock on them when I was a kid.. Stupid things kids do..They could have shot themselves.....

Here is the research on the 22 WMR reloading:????????????????????

Aye, messing around trying to swap bullets/powders on rimfire cartidges is dangerous business. Rimfirecentral has a poster that does this but he has some specialized dies and he starts with empty primed cases. I'm not even sure if you could get any HMR primed cases as he mostly worked with 22LR.

I did some inquiries hoping to find a factory 17 HMR 25 grain HP in the factory loading... Checking with Midwayusa and CCI all I could find in the HP 17 HMR was a 20 grainer..  If I was going to hunt fox with a 17 HRM I sure wouldn't use the 17 grain V-Max thats for sure... It would be a 20 grain FACTORY in a HP or Soft Point...

Not being one to give up on a challenge I have successfully loaded a 25 grain hollow point in a 17 hmr.The gained energy is very impressive, trajectory is the same as factory loads and the accuracy is much improved. So don't give up on the hmr.

The 20gr has killed everything Ive shot with it.  I know of a few southern boys that use them on deer with good results.  I would not he satate to shoot a fox with one.

I thought I would share some more information on this load as there has been some interest in it off site. The 17 hmr has probably been put down more than any other load that has been used for predators. So here's the facts.Energy at the muzzle shooting factory ammo is 250ft.lbs for the 17 hmr, compared to 324 ft.lbs for the 22 mag.I have hunted with guys using the 22 mag. and it anchored fox very well. The problem with the 22mag is that its accuracy is not as good as the hmr mainly because the trajectory is not as flat as the hmr.So what if you could have the best of both worlds. That's why I decided to play around with the 17 hmr.Energy at the muzzle for the modified load is 319 ft.lbs. and should exceed the 22 mag at 50 yards but have not shot it enough to determine that. The extra energy is achieved by using 4.9 grains of alliant 2400 powder and using a 25gr. hornady hollowpoint. If sited in at 50 yards it was dead on at 100yards.I have not had any runners. The other problem with the factory loads was that if a head shot was taken it would blow up before penetrating, that is no longer the case. The reason I settled on this load was that there is almost no drop from 50 to 100 yards. The IMR 4227 powder was outstanding for consistant accuracy but had about a 3/4 inch drop at 100 yards. So there's the facts for what its worth.I'm not saying its the perfect fox load but it works and I have a lot of fun playing with it.

I bought a very nice savage 17 hmr with thumbhole laminate stock and stainless barrel and never use it. I topped it off with a Simmons Aetec silver scope and it just sits in my safe unused. I might as well sell it if someone wants to buy it. I sighted it in and then put it away. It shoots good....but I have to many guns to use them all....I guess I should keep it for my lil shadow....he is 14 months old and already owns a 243 ruger. Problem is he uses his left hand a lot and might be lefthanded.

Foxtrot,

This is a unique idea.  Did you chronograph any of these modified loads?  As an avid shooter and reloader, I find this interesting.  I own an 17HMR myself.   I usually use my 22 hornet for fox.  The 17 HMR does not have the energy of a hornet, but will a well placed shot under 100 yards, you'll have a dead critter.  The nice thing about a 17HMR is the minimal fur damage.  I found that most plastic tipped bullets  tend to splash and create a larger entry hole at times.  I found that the 20 gr game points work pretty good.

I do not have a chronograph of my own but I did shoot a couple through one at the range and it was right around 2398 fps. at the muzzle.
Formula for ballistic energy: 1.Bullet wt. divided by 100
                                                  2.Velocity divided by 100
3.Multiply the adjusted weight by adjusted velocity,by the velocity again.
and then multiply by 2.22= foot pounds of energy.

2400fps  with 25gr bullet from HMR!  That's pretty cool.
