called in my first coyote!
« on: February 07, 2011, 04:33:30 PM »
Friday morning i got a pic of a coyote on my trail cam at 4:30 am. so yesterday morning i went out to see if i could have any luck calling it in. got to my spot at 5:30, and snuck up to the edge of the field real quiet wind in my face and set my foxpro up ten yards to my left. i was sitting there and all of a sudden coyotes a good distance off just started going crazy, howling and yipping and just carrying on for 5 minutes. a little while after they stopped i turned on the challenge howl on the foxpro and only played it one time. nothing answered back so i said i would give it ten minutes and play it again. well before i could do that i heard something moving right behind me turned around to see a coon ten feet away so i spooked it off, maybe five minutes later a coyote jumps out in to the field 100 yards away and starts moving towards me, dropped it at 50 yards with my Ruger .243. 34 pound male

it sure was a rush, ive called in a handful of foxes but never had a coyote come in. in your guys opinion is the least amount of calling best? ive gone out calling many times for a couple years now and my usual calling was just right off the bat dying rabbit and i saw a couple fox with that but not near as much as i was expecting, because we do have a lot of fox and coyote in my area. then i go out yesterday morning make one howl and shot a coyote, just luck? or is that the "trick", i've never thought about it so much before but it does make sense, cause when you think about it a rabbit isnt qoing to squeal for five minutes straight in the wild, its gonna squeal for 30seconds-minute maybe shorter. thats just my opinion but seems logical. the more natural sounding u are to a coyote the more comfortable its going to be to come in? i dont know ive only shot one but cant wait to hunt some more and see if that holds true

Great job.

I think most of us call for a minute and then have a period a silence.  Randy Anderson stated in an article one time that the best call in pa for the mating season is a single howl and then sit and wait.  i haven't had it work yet out of several attemps.
