Setup
« on: January 22, 2011, 07:58:26 PM »
Hi all,
New here.

I just wanna get my setup right.
Question:
I aim my fox pro into the wind and I sit down wind of the call and to the right or left of it?

Thanks  ;D

You can do that if you want to hunt a farm and the wind is not blowing down wind.. what your doing here is having the coyote and fox work the speaker first.. Then it circles and goes down wind.. Your set up like this you want the predator, the coyote or a fox to make the arc above where you are posted.. You don't really have to be to the left or the right  just far enough down that when it makes it arc it between you and the speaker.. They don't smell you at all since they arc above your spot..You might want to go down past 100 yards for this set up..Big farm fields maybe even 250 yards...

Now you can hunt another way.   Speaker facing down wind... You move down wind about 75 to 100 yards.  Now this is when you want to set up 30 yards cross wind of the main speaker beam.. You have to know which side of the sound beam to set up on... Set up on the side that has the least cover on that side... Since they will propably come from the cover and make the arc and go into the wind toward the main sound beam of the speaker.

Both of the above set up are for shotgun and rifle at night time..

If you going to use a rifle at night time.. You can use a mouth call or speaker  just to your side...Now you need to be standing and using a shooting rest when you do this..Wind at your back..You want to pop them one with your illuminated rifle scope and light as they make the arc down wind of your sound source.. They will most times get down wind and then try to come to the loudest part of the calling. So it all depends on how big the field.

Small one acre lots... Put the speaker in front of you about 30 yards and set behind the speaker.  Set 30 yards to the side of the speaker.. wind at your back. Pick the best side based on the cover.. the side with the most cover set on the other side.. Use a shotgun most times.. If it's safe beyond the lot you could use a rifle but I like to use a shotgun on these small farm lots like this.. Be ready for your shot since the area is confined. they will come into the field head for trhe speaker and you pop them one with the shotgun real fast like..

Hope you understand all I have recommened?

Thank you. There are some corn fields but mostly woods. I wanna try to make a stand in the morning before daylight in the woods.

Remember the more you walk in the more your going to get busted.  If you can park by the woods fine.. If you have to park below by the corn.. You might want to call them from the woods to the corn.  Remember now cut corn stubble is hard to see things coming in if your at eye level...
See you got to be able to read the land and remember how they come into the wind...Most times especially fox.. Coyotes wow they are tough.. I do like to make a coyote work the speaker like I recommended.. done right!!!They might not even know your there since the arc is made between you and the speaker and your down wind of the arc...

Thanks, I will.
I'm afraid that's the only way I can be legal. :-( so oh well I'll get out there anyway, hopefully it's worth a shot. LOL

Legal is:  You are allowed to hunt 25 yards from any road... Now if there are buildings and cemeteries by the road  then that's another story.. 25 yards is not legal then...
