Got my 1st yote
« on: September 07, 2010, 09:30:21 AM »
Greetings,
Got my 1st one yesterday afternoon, it has been worth the 3 year no shoot em.  Was out hunting ghogs, got one at 225 yds, started walking the lower fields looking for more ghogs, looked up towards the upper fields and seen something, thought maybe a deer, glassed it, coyote 550- 600 yds out, no shot.  Took the orange hat off, put the camo on, crossed the creek, sat up prone on the bottom of the next field over.  Used the KCC lil-pekker vol distress, waited, nothing, used the rabbit distress, waited, nothing, again on the rabbit distress, waited, nothing, again on the rabbit distress, waited, here he comes directly upwind of me at 70 yds, crap!!!  moved the gun to sight him, he stops at 50 yds head on, took the shot, missed, he take off back towards the woods.  As so many of you on here preach, I started calling again with the vol distress, back he comes 125 yds out in front of me, circling to wind me.  Let him get straight out from me at 125 yds and used the vol distress, he stops, bang, he took off again, thought i missed again, after 3 steps, goes down flopping, dead dog.  Weighted in at 40 pound male.
Cheers,
Bill

Congratulations on the first yote, hopefully many more to come.

the two that were shot in sept were full grown males, you think we would be getting some pups to come in this time of year.

Hi everyone, new here and new to coyote hunting.  I have been researching feverishly since June on this sport.  Been reading all your posts including ones on PAFOA.  Have done some set ups in Bradford, Wyoming and Carbon counties in the past two months.  Have never seen a coyote in my 39 years and I have lived in Ca., Or, and here.  Not even sure if I have ever even heard one..can't remember.  Last night I was up above Beltsville in the middle of a large field.  I dragged in behind me to set up, a large dead coon I found on the side of the TP on the way up.  Sucker was the biggest coon I have ever seen.  (and I have killed a few of those)  Anyway, dragged it in behind me from the road to the location I planned to call (350 ish yards from road)  Set the coon 85 yards in front of me on a shooting lane, and buried myself in the dried grass which was in rows.  (fresh cut field about 300 yards long by 400 yards surrounded by woods)  I was located on the north side of the tip of the resevoir.  Slight crosswind from north to south.  I was positioned facing west with the coon in fronty of me.
My light is a Promos 100yard.  (not bright enough)  Sometime between 6:30 when I out it there, and 8:45 when I finally decided to take a look.  The coon was GONE!!  Something evidently grabbed it right under my nose.  I then decided to trek back to the truck and move on to a different site, while walking towards the road (75yards away) something jumped into the woods.  I kneeled instantly and figured I would squeeze the squeaker for ****s and giggles just to see if the critter was dumber than me.  Nope.
Got to the truck, unloaded all gear, was just about to start ign, when I heard a serenade coming from the area where the critter had jumped into the woods.  At first I thought it was my Power Dogg because it sounded EXACTLY like it.  But I had removed the batteries which I always do when I put it in the back pack.  Serenade lasted about 30-45 seconds.  I grabbed the Power Dog and rifle only and headed back down to the start of the field.  I laid down in the 16" tall grass and figured since my light is not that bright I would simply watch one of the lanes made by the mowing of the field.  See what happens.  Guess what I forgot...Battery for light.  So I left rifle and caller and made all the noise again to get the battery figuring the coyotes are standing just in the wood line, saying "look at this idiot, he is persistent".  Figured on the way back in, I would take a longer route an try to be quiet.  Needless to say I think, I never heard anything for the next hour, and since I had to be at work at 5AM I left.

Did I do everything wrong?  Why did they serenade when I got to the truck?  If I could f waited till 2am, do you think they would of come in?

Whitefeather.....You got busted but just think now you have had an experience with one of the smartest coyotes...The Eastern Coyote.

Go back and try some food distress sounds...Do you have an electronic caller with a remote? They are going to get in direct line with your speaker and come into the wind...If you have a remote set up so your cross wind of the main beam of the speaker. Use the woodpecker if it's windy  or use fieldmice if the wind is not blowing much...People on here have already killed coyotes in September just using the fieldmouse sound alone..

Congrats on the coyote.
"Predators are either active & feeding, semi-active & callable, or utterly inactive & then practically speaking, no call is needed; we're just taking our guns for a walk. We can & should get used to it, & follow their leed cuz they just ain't eager nor apt to follow our’s any time soon!

Thanks UB I will try that.  I have the Power Dogg and it has a remote.
