Caught in a downpour....
« on: July 25, 2010, 08:28:01 PM »
This afternoon, my newphew and I were kayak'n on the Susquehanna around the islands below Selinsgrove. I was scouting for Beaver and Coon. We floated withing 30' of a Bald Eagle perched on a overhanging limb.
Checked the weather channel before we left this morning...Thunder storms around 5pm. Fine, we'll be off the water by 4 or 4:30.
You know where this is going, Right?
You guessed it.
We got hammered on.
Rain, Rain, Rain.
Lightning, Thunder, Wind and more Thunder and Lightning.
And more heavy Rain
Anyone else ever caught in the rain and no where to hide?

Returning to the boat launch we saw a canoe approaching, then beached and a man and woman got out and picked up their gear. Without saying a word, my nephew and I carried their canoe up the ramp and placed it on their SUV. The guy said, 'Thanks Hern'.
We were all drench and it was raining fierecly at this time. I pulled the brim of my hat up and saw an ole friend and his wife that I haven't seen in years.
I said, 'any time, Bill, for you and Ellen'.

Never caught canoing.  But caught in heavy rains and lightning while hanging tree stands.  The property owner had to come out into the field in his truck to knock me over the head to get me out of the tree.

Been caught a few times in spring gobbler season.  Always pays off to have one of those cheap plastic ponchos.

Remember two times...Once in February while I was hunting daytime fox...I get caught in a Electrical storm and end up laying my gun down on the ground   (Lightning rod) and sitting under a Turnpike Bridge. It's not suppose to lightning in February???????

Also Grouse hunting once too...layed that lightning rod (shotgun) on the ground too and sat under a stand of pines...Rain and lightning a good bit too..Knew Felt like those stand of  pines were going to turn into a burning bush any second...
Figure...worst thing to do would be to continue to hunt with a metal gun in your had. elected to lay it on the ground and just sit by it...

we were up in canada for scouts one year and while we were motoring across the lake there was a bad storm brewing.  we had the throttle buried full tilt.  half way across the one kids hair stood on end.  everyone else had too short of hair to stand it on end.  that really scared us.

I got caught on Lake Erie in my 18 foot boat and a storm blew in. I immediately headed for Walnut Creek. I had the boat standing almost straight up in the air to cut the waves head on. The closer we got to Walnut Creek the higher the waves were. That was a scary day. It's no fun in a 18 foot bobber in 5 to 7 foot waves. That same thing happened to me on the Ohio side too. We went out of Port Clinton and the sun was up. a beautiful day. All of a sudden storm clouds came at us from Canada and by the time we were ready to head in we were surrounded by water spouts. That day was the first time I had ever seen them up close and personal. Spooky!
