Wild Hogs
« on: July 08, 2010, 01:21:19 PM »
Does anyone have any info on the Pa wild hogs. I haven't heard a thing lately about the hog population. The last I heard they were in 18 counties of which 4 are off limits to killing hogs. They reproduce at an incredible speed so it just seems odd that no one is talking about them. I've Googled them, and been to the PAGC web site and I come up with nothing to speak of. Can anyone update us on the hog standings?

Last I heard Bedford County is where the majority of the hogs are.. Now if they lifted the ban on hunting there that would be a place to hunt them? Can't understand why the PGC would stop legal hunting in counties with large populations?

Have a friend from Bedford that told me this story...Guy brought up a load of hogs for a commercial hunting preserve..  The owner did not want them anymore... The trucker called back to find out what to do with them...He was told release them somewhere.. Hence he let them go in Bedford county...I do not know if this is true or not...

I have not seen Hern on the site..  I know he has been approved or accepted by the PGC to help trap them...

The PGC feels that hunters will push them into other counties if hunted. And then they will be pushed even further. They prefer trapping them to get rid of them. The part I don't understand is that they are prolific breeders and we should have more of them in the state. Maybe the PGC is keeping them in check and they are not spreading. The last issue of PX has an article about wild hogs in Ms. Apparently they have established a solid foothold their as opposed to Pa. I guess time will tell.

That is true the pgh is traping them. There was getting to be a lot in my area. Between my cousins and my self we took 16 or 18 in 2 yrs. The last 2 years none. They are protected in Bedford Co. How ever there are still some around. We seen some 3 weeks ago. That is what we heard on how they got started. They have been around here for 12 or 14 yrs. They really started to breed fast about 6 yrs ago. The trapping has slowed them down. But they do move alot when pushed.  They were alot of fun to hunt. They are very hard on cornfields when the corn is ready.

Other than Bedford county, why aren't they growing in large numbers like other states. Maybe the Pa and Northeast climate have something to do with slow reproduction. The South and West are loaded with them. Once they arrive in a new area there's no way of getting rid of them. I don't think we will see the hog explosion like the South and West. jmo. Does anyone know of a Mid Atlantic or Northern tier state that has a growing population of hogs. It's hard to believe the PGC are so much better trappers than most or all other states. Not to say they aren't doing their job, in fact, they must be doing a remarkable job.

I heard they were in Tioga, I have yet to see one...They have a game preserve up there, and someone said about the time the pgc came out with the idea that we had them in the state that they had escaped the high fences of the preserve and were running wild in the northern part of the state...I was unaware of the protection they have on them in bedford co...I was under the impression it was shoot on sight

I've heard they have shot a few in the Tioga area. There are 4 counties you can not hunt them and Bedford is one of them. I forget the other 3. The info is probably in the new hunting reg" book somewhere. I'll have to look for it so I know.

I know they are in Potter along the NY border.  My wifes uncle has seen them on the leases he has up there.
