Weekend Hunting.
« on: December 21, 2009, 08:10:52 AM »
Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed hunting in the tournement this weekend.  I hunt to hunt but there is something different about hunting in a tournement.  i hope to see more events like this one in the future.

Friday night we hunted from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. 1st set I called in a red that caught me by surprise, when i turned he was 30 yards away just standing there, i must have hit him too much with the light, he bolted and a saw eyes again at 40 yards for just for a second and then he was gone, i kept calling and had another red come in from down wind, he circled the caller but would never get closer than 60 or so yards to the downwind shooter.   that is all the eyes we saw for the rest of the night.

Saturday we hunted from 7 p.m. until about 12 a.m.  snow was heavy at times and it was windy.  Only had eyes on one stand, was about 15 minutes into the set and was playing js grey fox pup. when i was going to turn around and grab the caller because i heard coyotes about 250 yards away.  when i turned I saw eyes coming from the upwind side and about 70 yards to my left, i first thought i was as coyote by how way it was moving.  It circled to the downwind side and ran up a hedge row, i realized it was a red so i cut the caller and started to mouse squeak when he was about 70 yards out, he ran in to about 50 and stopped so a lip squeaked, he took a couple of bounds and i shot him at about 40 yards with 3in BB's out of the stoger.  quick and clean.

Once again, i want to say thank you for the hunt.

glad you participated bud. and congrats on your red!

i never got out calling the whole weekend.. :(..had family from out of toen stay the night friday, then they were snowed in at my place till sunday afternoon when the road finally got cleared up for them to travel home. i did load up the truck saturday night around midnite when the snow stopped...but with the 12" of snow we got than the drifts on top of that i never pulled off the road to call even with my cables on the tires. i drove to 2 spots and decided i'd better return home to the warm wood stove instead of spending the night diggin myself out of some ditch.

haven't been out calling since with you at the D1 hunt back before thanksgiving.....talk about withdraw!! ;D

Scott,

I agree.  I hunt to enjoy my time afield and the challange.... BUT... the contest hunt often inspires me to hunt just a little longer or harder...  It's fun to form a game plan and watch it fail. ;D
