couple of stands this morning.
« on: November 01, 2009, 03:27:34 PM »
got out early this morning for a couple of stands at one of my hunting areas.  called 3 or 4 sets, got one red to come out and take a look, about a 200 yards shot, couldn't get the crosshairs settled in time so i didn't shoot.

going back out tonight in the same area, lots of sign while i was walking around.

got out tonight just after dark and did a couple of stands, nothing in the fields made about 3 good stands in one area.   on the way home we hit this spot we have been talking about trying, called in a grey in the first minute, my buddy got him at about 15 yards.

no lights, i wait until it is just getting light before i leave the house.  i don't want to get there too early and bump them when they are going back to their bedding areas.  this is how i like to hunt on Sunday mornings.  There is nobody around, no quads or other people hunting deer or small game.  i usually hunt from first light until about 9:00 or 10:00 am.

i find an area where i think they are bedded down for the day usually a thick area next to a field, i then get into position which is usually 100 to 200 yards from the tick stuff.  i set the caller next to me and let a fox sound rip(baby red fox, red grey fight, red fox pup) loud.  if they are there they usually come out in the first five minutes, they will come to the edge of the field and take a look, you have to shoot them there because they rarely will come any closer.
i like to use my .17 fireball with a good tripod for this type of hunting.   This is one of my favorite types of hunting for fox.  Also, i have never called in a grey with this method, only reds.

also one of my favorite spot is across a small pond or lake, i can pull them out from the tick stuff to the edge of the pond and shoot across the water.  only draw back is now i have to walk around the pond to get them.
