1st Day Monster
« on: May 03, 2015, 09:11:15 AM »
So there we were, full camo, hunkered down singing the sweet siren song of a lonely hen. Two gobblers sounding off as they march up the other side of the powerline just inside the woods, out of sight. Heart hammering as loud as the gobbles in my ears. One at a time the 2 red headed beast step from the brush, take one look at the decoys and run, they may still be running for all I know. It's not even 7 am, wow what a rush. Figuring we need to move we stand to pack up, shoot the bull for a bit when my hunting partner looks to our right and sees 3 more stutters headed our way around the corner of the field. He hit the deck I jumped behind a small tree, guns at the ready.  Out steps a truely huge turkey, looks our way, seeing the decoys, puffs up and starts a zigzag strut, putting him right on the edge of my comfortable range for my 3 1/2 inch mag. Silent as he came in he turned to head to the other woods, it's now or never in my mind. I shoot and surprise my self, he rolls and hobbles a little, the beast is dead.
Still in shock as I type this, he was truely a one in a life time bird, he has it all.

Congratulations.  Great Turkey.
"Predators are either active & feeding, semi-active & callable, or utterly inactive & then practically speaking, no call is needed; we're just taking our guns for a walk. We can & should get used to it, & follow their leed cuz they just ain't eager nor apt to follow our’s any time soon!

Thank you guys! It will be a hunt to remember and tell the grandkids about. Just can't wait to get him up on the wall in a few months!
