A caliber for coyotes, coons and fox?
« on: December 28, 2011, 08:55:27 AM »
I have a question for you. When you hunt fox what caliber rifle do you use? My wife got me a kill light predator kit for christmas and what to give night hunting a try. I have a 22-250 and a 243 rifle that i can use. I want to use something that wont mess up the hide on foxes and coons. But i want to be able to take a coyote if the chance comes up. I'm reloading nosler ballistic tips right now but i'm think of going to a solid partition bullet to save hides. What do you guys think?
Hunt safely!

Use the 22-250  a 243 is gonna blow a hole in em.

As for the loading If you hit a yote with a solid its gonna blow right through em ,Yeah a small hole ,but if you are hunting them at night you may find yourself losing more than you find cause they are gonna run and your gunna have to track em.But if your huntin daytime all is well.
Play around a bit and see what works best for your situation and if all else fails ,you are having fun..

 Good Luck

Boy savage has the 17 hornet rifle in the works.Hornady is making ammo. This could be the cat's whiskers for close range fox, coons or called in yotes. Looks easy to reload ( all but handling the 17caliber bullets ). Get the tweezers.

How much different will the 17 Hornet be from the 17 Fireball?

For a all around gun i would go with the 223 cal. with a 55 grain soft tip bullet .  Will drop a coyote and does not do much fur damage on a fox.

THe  17 hornet is based off the 22Hornt case. Just pick up and Hornet case and compare to the Fireball and the difference is apparent. Hornet is rimmed and the Fireball is not. The 17 Hornet looks so sweet. A rebarrelled CZ or something similar could be the cat's WHISKERS.

Use a 223 or 22 250.     Put 11-12 grains of Bluedot behind your favorite varmint bullet and you have a nice fur friendly round.  The velocity will be on par with a 22 hornet.  I've zapped many fox with this load.

Given the 17 Fireball is a fantastic preadtor round I don't understand a need for a 17 Hornet?
