The guys that keep the fur seam to like the 22 hornet 223, 17 fire ball and 17 rem calibers, not rim fire. As far as guns the best one? Buy what you can afford and the best scope you can afford. As far as what rifle maker, well that choice should be left up to you and what you like.
For a brief moment I could hear nature through all the noise.

.17 centerfire is my first choice, my second would be .22 hornet.

good luck with your new gun... Great gun the 17 center fires  for all predators you can take with a furtakers license  and also outstanding gun for woodchucks too..

A 223 is a great gun. My experience is that it's not as fur friendly on fox, but is excellent for coyotes. The right bullet would help though. I just never played around with mine for predator hunting. I mainly use it for deer, and love the results from it. It's amazing the performance these little guns do on deer and there is not really any recoil. Brass is cheap! You can't go wrong with this caliber in my opinion. I ripped some big holes in foxes with it, but I shot all of them with my deer hunting loads. My fault.

Thanks for the info. I have a 30-06 for Deer but I figured a 223 could be my back up for deer if needed.

I am looking a picking up a 223 this week

What do you guys think about a .221 fireball. My father n law has one and loves it. We've only used it for coyotes. How would it do on foxes?

It's legal where I hunt. Not sure what other states regs are but for where I am in pa the 223 is a favorite of a lot of the locals that I hunt and intermingle with. They are quieter, don't spook deer so bad, making it possible to shoot more than one (when legal), the list just goes on. Love this caliber......I think my favorite caliber of them all would be the 280.

As long as it is a centerfire .223 then yes (also as long as its in an area open to rifle hunting)
THIS IS SPARTA!!
