"09" deer season..
« on: November 30, 2009, 05:22:34 PM »
It started raining 30 minutes before I left the house this morning. I had the decide where to hunt. One spot offered convenience while the other was more of a lucky spot. I headed out in the rain to the lucky spot that has produced more bucks for me and was closer to the buck I wanted in archery season. I got to what ever shelter I could find from the rain and planned on staying as long as possible. At first light I say 2 does racing across the hillside obviously pushed from another hunter. Minutes later I saw an adult doe with 2 yearlings coming from the way the earlier does headed to. I assume the 2 does spooked them as I have seen it many times before from this spot. The adult doe busted me and they took off the way the other doe's went. About 30 minutes later I seen this buck on the same trail that I took my first 10 point on. He seen me when I seen him and he started up the hill. I made a quick adjustment to get on him. I was expecting him to continue the way he was headed but he never appeared and I got worried that he managed to stay behind a tree as he was running up the hill, just like an old gobbler. Another glimpse of the other side of the tree proved me wrong as he was still standing there looking at me. He was about 100 yards and I didn't have have time to adjust the power on my scope or use a shooting stick. I felt comfortable (as one could be) and pulled the trigger. I saw him buckle as he headed the way he started to go before he stopped. He ran 20 yards up hill then 10 down and thats where he expired. I was gonna pass on him but I've been passing on bucks for a couple years now that I forgot what a nice buck looks like.

Thanks. This was the first buck I seen in rifle season and I was tagged out by 8:00am. I seen bigger bucks during archery and I missed the biggest buck of my life this archery season but I'm very happy with it.
Congrats on the doe, Longhair.

I'm heading out in the AM with my smoke pole to tag another doe or 2 or 3, since I still have 8 antlerless tags.
