My son's 1st gobbler
« on: April 27, 2008, 07:30:52 PM »
It's been an awesome season so far.   Took my 10 year old son Zach out for the first time last Saturday.  Been watching a couple real nice birds for the last couple weeks.  We went in Friday evening and set up the blind so we wouldn't have to carry it in the next morning.  Long story short, I called in 2 longbeards to within about 30 yards first thing in the morning, but he waited a little to long and and he didn't shoot.  Had a great time and we also squeaked in a big coon while we were there.

This past Friday, we went in again and set up the blind.  We were in the blind by 5:15 yesterday morning.  We heard some sticks crack behind us around 5:45 and wouldn't ya know someone set up about 80 yards away.   Shortly after daylight, a couple started gobbling about 150 yards or so ahead of us and the calling competition between me and the other guy did too.  Turned out to be 3 jakes and luckely they liked my calling better.  This time he didn't wait too long.  Shot this 17-1/2 lb 4" beard jake.  I was really proud of him, he left the first bird go by (said he couldn't get the gun to hold still LOL) and made a great shot on the second one.

Best day hunting ever 8)

For a brief moment I could hear nature through all the noise.
