Looking at purchasing a range finder. What is a good inexpensive one to buy?

For day use only any of them will do the job. if you want to be using it at night predator hunting the one's with with the black digital readout are very hard to see, there are two brands out there that have the red read out and the darkness of night doesnt affect it at all. I cant think of the brand names with the red readout to save my life, MisterJake has one, maybe he can jump in here.

I use a Leika.  It's very compact and reaches out to 1200 yards.  Like Darin said, it lights up red and is very easy to see and use at night.  I know Leupold also makes one that has a red readout also.  Not sure what model it is though.

Unless you going to hunt the wide open spaces I would assume that you would not need one that measure 500 yards plus.  You may want to look at one of the three that I listed all three get the job done and money wise are a good deal.

Redfield 600 = $143.
Simmons LRF = $152.  (This is the one I have)
Leupold RX-600 = $180.  (The extra $37 over the Redfield is for the Leupold name (IMO) since Redfield was bought out by Leupold)

Thanks Cj! How do you like yours? Does it fog up? Yea I only it for 250yds max.

I like mine, it gets the job done and didn't break the bank.  It doesn't fog up but keep in mind our climate is considerably different than yours.  As a matter of fact I had to look up that word - fog. ;)  A friend has a $1200 one and out to 500 yards we get the same reading +/- a yard or two.
