Seen the first ground hogs out yesterday. I think they were phil's kin. Mabel, Ethel, and uncle willie. Maybe phil was right, spring is right around the corner !

Holy cow guys.  Groundhogs here would need to dig through 12" of snow to get out, and I'm only 20 minutes north of ol Punxy Phil.

I'm trying to work my way out to 3-400 yards. Had one at 280 yards that I shot at for a long time. I'd shot and miss and he'd go in the hole. Had a smoke and he'd pop back up and I'd take another crack at him. This went on for at least an hour. Needless to say, he's a target for another day. One thing for sure, the critters ate good last night !!!!!

I had a good morning and got 5.  Woohoo!

I lost count somewhere along the line, but estimate I'm at around 40 now.

I've been seeing lots of deer, a few fox, and one recent black coyote pup.

1 more saturday, that's 50. Mine plus another 25 from another guy( who just joined the PPHA ). That's 75 from the same farm and still have 1 big field to go plus all the stuff to get brush hogged that ain't been touched in years.  The land owner and the farmer is really happy !!!!!!! 8)

Three more. One single and a double. Had 4 in the same field. So I took the shortest(about 90 yds) and the longest(290yds). And that was resting off a round hay bale !!! Don't mean to blow my own horn, but it seems that lately I couldn't hit crap past 200 yds w/o a shooting bench.
BTW, the 90 yarder was an eye popper. At least the one eye that was still there. That makes 53.

Post by: longhair on July 24, 2007, 11:08:42 AM
That's not a bad idea. In all fairness, one of ---er-- two of the misses was at 400 yards resting on a tripod. Us older folks need that steady rest thing. I carry a shooting bench on my quad for just those ocasations. I was going to shoot a third time resting off my backpack but two fawns came out right behind the hog. So I said that was that. Didnt know what else was back there. But I did miss at about 90 and 125. Most of the time where I hunt, I rest off the big round hay bales cause they are all over the place. To be honest, it's me not the gun !!!!! but then again, if you hit your target everytime-------aahhhhhhh, that's why they call it hunting. Not to mention, that's a target for another day.  :)

Not so fast, it's not over yet. The "shoot off" field is ready. I'll give you a call soon. But we got some other fields that we got to attend to. You just don't know how hard it was to not shoot there today after the rain. I was scopeing the field and the farmer asked for help. So I went with him. But still managed to get three tonight. That's 60. 8)

That's ok, I'm not trying to get a trophy let alone take yours. You earned it fair and square. My trophy will have to be mounted and hung on the wall. That is the yote that I was telling you about. Just like buck hunt'in, I got my sights set on one particular critter and that's what I'm going after. Now, don't get me wrong, if I get a crack at any other yote-----well, I'm gonna take it.  8)

I got one dead, no questions asked.  I got one painted hole.  That puts me at 1.50.  Then, I had a few more confirmed hits (3 people watched them get hit, roll around the ground a bit) but no blood as they made it back to their holes.   :?

Well the heck with that tripod. I'll have a new bipod for both guns this week. The only trouble with this is, I'll be in the prone position and might need to be wakened up. Now, if I could only find that silent dog whistle. Here little piggy, stand up and be counted !!!!!!!!!!
Title: Longhairs HOG BLOG or...THE KING AND I
Post by: longhair on August 01, 2007, 12:49:54 PM
Three more last night, I think that's 64. Had my new bipod on and thought I was missing them. But, came to realize that when I shot there was alot more there than I could see. I was shooting out to 300 yards or better so when I took the shot, I drew a little map of the field so I could remember where they was at. There was a butt load of them and after the shot, they scattered. That was why I thought i was missing them. The one I shot was down, but here I am trying to hit running targets at plus 300 yards.   Yea, like that's gonna happen !!!!!!!
BTW, the land owner was happy. The farmer was happy. The neighbors were bitch'in and the police showed up. Before I ever started I lazered 160 yards from the houses. At least 50 yards from the road and was shooting into a hillside. Everything was cool with the police and the owners son told me to keep up the good work. He is going to join me thursday night in the same spot. This is nothing new, it happens every year. It's just funny though, I've been shooting on this farm all summer.

Hey paul,
This is the field I was telling you about. I'd like to take about half a dozen guys out there shooting. I'm about ready to call the PGC and file hunter harassment charges on them !!!!!! But if it happens again, I want to use the local police to go and talk to them first. There's really no need for this !!!!!!!! :?
Title: Longhairs HOG BLOG or...THE KING AND I
Post by: paul555 on August 02, 2007, 11:44:38 AM
Interestingly enough, after I posted that yesterday, my wife and I went hunting.  We had the pleasure if dealing with a nut-case, and got to have a nice conversation with both the police and game wardens.  This nut tried to say we were shooting after hours (he kept saying they ended at 6:30?????) and he also said we're trespassing (my father-in-law is the farmer, his friend owns it, and we have full permission to be there).  In fact, it's a red-tag farm, and EVERYONE is allowed to hunt there.  This guy ranted and raved the whole time we were waiting for the game wardens and police to show up, saying we had no business hunting there and scaring 'HIS DEER', because he's an archery hunter and we should respect that and not hunt anything, not even groundhogs.  Keep in mind, this guy is just a renter of a mobile home that sits on the edge of the property, but thinks he has the hundreds of acres of farmland all to himself.

Long story short, the game wardens that he called were very nice to my wife and I, and encouraged us to hunt there again tonight, and they hope my wife gets her first deer during the red tag program.  They also explained to this nut that it is against the law to interfere with hunters (he always would jump on his quad and ride all around us every time he sees us hunting).  The state police (whom I called in response to his threats to shoot us) had a nice talk with this nut also, and both the game wardens and police felt confident he wouldn't be bothering us again.  I have my doubts, but both told us if he bothers us again to call them immediately.

How's that for an exciting evening!!

I'm cornfused.  Didn't the NUT see the Queen on the Hummer pivoting her new gun around?  What did the game warden say about your "Gun mounted Hummer"? You sure left alot out of the story.

Yoisers!

I did make one mistake in the story though.  I should have said my wife is trying to get her first 'doe'.  She got her first deer last year, which was a nice buck.  It should be back from the taxidermist this month!  Now she needs her first doe.   :D

Addition to the story: my father-in-law, the farmer of the land, talked to the owner this morning, and then placed a call to this fella.  He made it clear to him that we will be hunting there, and will not be harrassed.  He also made it clear to him that he better not ride his quad in the fields again, because if we see him do that again the police will be called by him and charges pressed by the owner.  He also made it clear to him that the 'No Trespassing' sign that the nut put up better be gone today.  This guy actually put up a 'No Trespassing' sign on property he doesn't own to keep hunters away.  The owner welcomes hunters and in fact participates in the deer control program.  And this nut thought he could post it.

Went out this evening and only got one. Had to use some tactical manuvers on him because of the location. WOW !!!!! This was the biggest and heaviest I've take'in this year. Talk about a HOG. And, yes, the police showed up BUT, everything was cool. I told him that whomever is making these calls needs to be talked to. He said that he would. I also told him that there is a law that protects me and if it goes much further, I will have no choice but to call the PGC and get them involved. He said that he didn't think it would be nessesary.

Hey paul, is this you rubbing off on me or is it me rubbing off on you ?? Or did we just both step in it at the same time ??  :?
