Things are looking up for my Fisher season. Guess what I pushed out on a deer drive last week? That's right, Mr. or Mrs. Fisher. Went back to the spot later in the day and did some scouting. I found tracks in the mud and an area it seems to be working and not where I jumped it.
I know it's a tall order but at least I found tracks. That is a major accomplishment without snow in the big woods of Cameron county. I am only gonna have four days to get it done so I need all the good MOJO you can send my way.
Now on to the questions. Should I gang set the area where I saw the tracks? Bait, lure or both? Can I over do bait and lure for a Fisher? Do fisher work dirt holes like fox or should I just make flat sets, post sets? Do Fisher eat grubs? It seems it was working some old fallen and half rotten pines. The only thing I could think it would be looking for is grubs, salamanders or termites but Grubs were the obvious choice.
-
Well I answered one of my questions. It wasn't eating grubs it was eating nuts. There were hickory nuts everywhere. I thought that Fisher were strictly meat eaters but the net said they will eat insects and nuts when prey is not available. Hmmmmmmmm?
-
Good luck! Hope to c some pics
-
I caught 2 of them 2 yrs apart in dirt holes for fox. In my backyard.
-
That's out of my league to answer
-
Good for you, you got the hard part over with...
Gang set- Yes, 3-4 sets at the hot locations. (you don't have much time)
Bait/Lure- Bait alone, Bait & Lure, Lure alone...mix it up
OverLure- No. Fisher's are dark colored Possums. If you are using a skunky lure, you don't need as much as you think
Dirtholes- Yes. Slightly bigger hole, don't need to blend to surroundings
Flat Sets- I would put in a well blended flat set, downwind of your dirthole(s)
What about Bobcats? My info also applies to Bobcat.
Lookn4Fisher, My best to you.

I'm just going to sit back and wait for the "PICTURE" of success ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. NO Pressure! Sonny!!! :P..... 8).....PS: Unsolicited TIP ;) Look for tracks ;D they don't have wings ::) so they have to walk everywhere :P and they leave little tracks :) :) Hope this helps :) :).......
[/quote] Hey "GOOSE" Sonny started new post so he wouldn't have to admit he was taking "POP's" advice...from his prior post of "King of Procrastinators" ::) ::) ::) No Worries ::) I never get any respect :o I told you he was going to "Google" it....................... 8)

:P :P :P :P :P :P Is this "FISHER EVE???" ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) WOW!!! The ANTICIPATION,I'll bet Hern has been up all night wringing his hands :P wishing he was there to supervise, ;) but no! ??? he got benched in favor of "Dumb Luck".. :P :P I guess it's probably not easy "gang setting traps" ??? Goose ??? is that like "carpet bombing?" :P I only have 1 trap so I don't use this method :-[ :-[ Well I broke out a bottle of "Hard Cider" for tomorrow's result's, win, or "he got away I don't know what happened"... ;D ;D ;D I wish he had invited us along ::) ::) we are always full of helpful stuff ;D ;D maybe not as helpful as Hern :P :P but freely given in keeping with the spirit of the occasion ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)............................... ;D ;D ;D ;D And the beat goes on!! :o :o :o :o

Lookn4Fisher is dealing with snow and cold today. They should be running the next few days/nights. I hope he gets a few traps out and remembers how to drive on snow covered mountain roads.
Goose, I had a Possum this morning in a #3 Bridger (6 1/2" jaw spread) with a 3 lb. drag and 8' of chain.
Drag was still hidden in place (not moved), chain extended straight across logging trail to Possum.
I was expecting a Grey, Red or Coyote of course. Maybe in a few days...lol
Also had a Deer Mouse caught in a #0 LS, set in a Weasel Box.
Another spot today...
Drove in a property this morning and onto the farm road, boogieing along and see a flock of Goose decoys to my right. Slow down and stopped. Got out and ran around the truck and shouted, 'just checking traps, I'll be out here shortly'. I see two heads pop up and both fellas yell, 'no problem'. I was on my way...
but caught a chill when I stepped outside. It was 21 degrees and the wind was blowing. The Goose hunters were laying in the field...I turned up the heater and slipped on my insulted gloves...
-
Oh yea, The Goose hunters and their spread were covered with a dusting of snow.
-
Yea the season came back in on the 18th....and I've only seen one flock in the past week checking traps :P :P :P :P The cold weather and ice will send them my way....but once again it's to get balmy hot :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ and we get to reset the migration again :o :o :o :o Tis the year of crazy weather for sure... :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

:( :( :( :( Day 3 :( :( :( :( NO word :( :( :( I said I wasn't going to worry ::) but us old people just can't help ourselves :-[ :-[ You would think if he had got one ;D he would have climbed the cell tower at Emporium and sent a message ??? ??? to his "POP's" :P so I wouldn't worry.... :P :P I hope all those clustered tracks weren't the Fishers waiting to catch the bus to St. Mary's :P and in a frenzy :o to find them ??? he's over the bank in a Laurel patch :P :P Get your chin up Hern, ;) I'm starting to think :o your going to be coming off the bench next year, for sure ;D ;D ;D ......... 8)
-
Thanks coach. I'll keep my chin up, but it's hard to be sitting in the bull pen when one was in the rotation all those years. Sitting here waiting my turn...
Don't worry about Lookn4Fisher, he's a big boy now. Regular Daniel Boone. Fisher fear him.
-
:( :( Sad to say, he is all grown up :( :( and is prone to poor choices! ::) Leaving you on the bench :P, missing FREE breakfast with his "BUD's" ;D to "party". :P , Shouting out! :o during "quiet time" at "Coyote College" ::), won't show his "POP's" his favorite ice fishing spots >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( fear of getting out fished ::) the list goes on..... :'( :'( Well today is "GO BIG or GO HOME" for Lookn4fisher ::) My best guess is he has driven to Renovo to consult with "Jumper Wilson" :o :o for the 2 minute drill ;D ;D....or he could be headed home ;D with his "Fisher" tied to the roof for the whole world to see :P :P and making his "Old Pop's" prouder ;D than proud ;D ;D ;D....I just hope he doesn't get a "freeze dried" mount :P :P I'm looking forward to a BBQ Fisher roast on his Patio ;D ;D.............. 8)

>:( >:( Looks like this is going to turn into "The Bedford Incident" ;)................... 8)
-
:( :( :( Goose keep your hand ready on the missile launch button :P :P :P He has to surface sometime ::) ::) he has to charge his batteries ;D ;D..........Ping! Ping! Ping!.......L$F aka:Lookn4fur,Lookn4fisher,Lookn4cover :o :o Pains me to say I hope you got a lump of coal for Christmas :( treating your old Pop's like this :P...come on we're dying to hear the story ;D ;D...and I can go back to helping Goose get the weather from Purry Co. on
"this crazy weather" ::) ::) and I can stop "Looking Up" ::) it's crooking my neck :P :P :P............... "Your OLD Pop's"............ 8)
-
;D ;D ;D ;D Must be quite the story as he has had time to write a book :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
-
I'm beginning to wonder Ernesto may have led him afoul up there in the high country... ;) ;) ;) lets not forget, he has a partner in crime up there in the form of the nefarious Bee's OB... ::) ::) ::) it pains me to think what may have befallen your son at the hands of those 2... 8) 8) 8)
-
:( :( Now don't start that!!!!!!! :-X :-X :-X His OLD Pop's is worried enough as is :'( ......He's probably secretly PM'd Hern with all the details ::) can't afford to make him mad :o might need him next year ;D time to mend the fences ::) ::) As far as the rest of us OLD "Coots" ::) ::) we can all go pound sand :P :P as he may never divulge the secrets of the mountains and those dirty track up everything Fishers :o
.........I would suggest a "Fisher Drive" ::) sorta like "Goose's Beaver drive" but with Fisher's :P for next year ;D but he doesn't want to ever hear Old Pop"s advice :-[ :-[ Anyway a Ranger friend of mine said he thought he saw a person matching his description heading North towards Canada tracking something :o :o....so we need to give it a couple of days before we launch a recovery :( :( :(......and if the Renovo 2 got him :P no worries ;D he will be easy to find ;) he''ll be sitting on a tri-pod swinging 360 and blowing a B's "Fisher" call ;D ;D ;D ;D..............8)
-
:( :( :( Now don't pick on the lad to much ??? ??? ??? he has one up on this old guy that I will admit to :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ he has trapped a beaver and I haven't :-X :-X :-X :-X so ya got to give him some credit and time ;D ;D ;D

??? ??? ??? ??? How much credit ???????????????? ??? ??? ??? How much time ???????????????????? ??? ??? ??? ??? I forgot to ask :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[.................... 8)
-
;D ;D ;D equity line of credit ??? ??? ??? and a TimeX :P :P :P :P :P You ask!! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Ta Daa! I'm alive and well pops. Fisher trapping was a bust. I'm sorry to let you down. :'( :'( :'( I set 18 traps total. I had one rain free trap check and it poured the remaining days. I actually pulled the traps one day early and headed home with my tail tucked deep. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ I was tired, dirty and needed a bath (so says my wife).
I saw a ton of deer, grouse, turkeys, two bull elk, an eagle and one snow leopard (aka bobcat) which despite my efforts would not step on my traps. Thank God I drive a Ford because if I had any other truck I would still be stuck in the wilds of Cameron County, holding onto my secrets. :o :o :o :o :o
I gave it my best but the weather beat me like a rented mule. Hopefully I will have a better story for you next year. By the way, I missed you two knuckleheads also. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Imagine that!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
-
2 knuckleheads, now that's a classic...
sorry to hear about all he rain, better luck next year...
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D The "BESTEST" Christmas present OLD POP's could get ;D ;D ;D ;D Sonny home and safe from those "Fisherless" forest of Cameron Co. ::) Well your "Unkle" Hern called that one! ::) He said those Fisher's feared you ;) and he was right ;D ;D All those Fisher tracks you saw ??? they ganged up and trekked up to Potter Co. to escape certain capture ::) ::) This is the only reasonable and logical explanation of why you got busted :o :o :o "No Worries" Your other Unkle "Goose" and I have been working on a super secret insertion vehicle ??? for next year ;D Nope not a Drone drop ;) better than that ;) we will have you in before those Fisher's know what hit them.... :P :P :P :P :P....................Fisher's are not making a monkey of my boy :P :P.......Pop is not going to stand for it .... ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::).................... 8)

Not a "FORD"...lol
-
Lookn4NextYear, the weather/rain beat down a lot of trappers. Did anyone in camp catch anything?
I think Heckle & Jeckle ( knuckleheads) had something to do with the rain...

As much of an idiot as I am I should have been a hero a bunch of times. Someone like you guys that are just the regular run-of-the-mill idiot become a heros! Of course I am jealous!
-
>:( >:( >:( BW your time would be better spent ;) counting wormholes and searching for the elusive ::) Wolpertinger :o :o and leaving us "regular run-of-the-mill idiot's" alone :P :P :P :P :P................... 8)
-
;D ;D ;D Nah, then he wouldn't have nuttin to do!! ::) ::) ::)
-
It was supposed to be three of us but my buddy had an emergency at work and had to go home on Sunday so it was just me and a young lad in training.
I got an update yesterday as my buddy went back up to camp for some predator hunting. He saw the fisher working the area that I was trapping. Figures! Just wrong timing and bad weather I guess??
-
;) ;) ;) Aaaaah Grasshopper ??? ??? ??? you learn quickly, :-\ :-\ :-\ critter smarter than you :P :P :P :P :P

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Trapper meeting yesterday ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Rumor!!!!!! ::) ::) ::) ::) PGC fur people are open to maybe ;) ;) ;) ;) opening Fisher and Bobcats in 4b and I guess maybe some other areas :) :) :) also possibly extending Fisher season another week ;D ;D ;D ;D I guess this is in response to a letter they received from a distraught wife :( :( whose hubby couldn't catch 1 the 1st day or even the whole current time frame :P :P.......apparently she is having a hard time dressing him in the morning ::) and getting him off to work :P :P having a detrimental effect on their boys :( :( :( She tried "Cold Shoulder Therapy" ??? ??? little to no effect :o :o...stay tuned........ 8)

You are lurking for knowledge. That's why I started another thread. Maybe you will learn enough to catch something other than a possum this year. :o :o :o
