Title: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Buckwheat on December 16, 2013, 12:31:49 PM
Does anyone shoot them.
I have been looking at getting a airforce air rifle but can not find a real reason to spend that much money on having one.
But who knows, maybe I do not need a reason.

Buckwheat,

Last month I purchased a Benjamin Marauder .25cal from pyramydair.com and I have to say what a blast to shoot these new high power air rifles!!  The only drawback is in Penna they're not legal to hunt with.   That being said I have a few farms where I use this to assist in rodent and problem animal control inside of the barns and grain silos.  My Mrod is accurate as any .22 that I have shot and I've taken animals out to 70yds with it.  One farm in particular lets me hunt because I eradicate the barn pests very quietly lol.  I am not an expert by any means but did tons of research before buying mine.  So if you have any questions send me a pm and I will get you my cell number.

For suburbia and in town a break barrel in .22 cal that delivers 18- 30 ft.lbs of energy is great. I use a Crosman "Discovery in .22 cal and have killed groundhogs @ 30 yrds. Hatsan Bt65 in .25 cal that delivers about 60 ft. lbs of energy and is a tack driver. Also a .45 cal rifle that delivers 150 ft. lbs. All these rifle though are PCPs (precharged pneumatics) and give you multiple shots on 3.000 psi of air but these can get very expensive.

Boy it looks like there are some pellet gun enthusiasts on the board.
Any of you experts hear anthing good or bad about Air Force Air Guns?
I have been looking at them.

As I said in my prior message I'm no expert but a newbie. My Mrod is the first PCP I've owned but certainly not the last one.  My experience so far has been great. Consistent dime size groups at 50 and 75 too! The price to start can be daunting but I'm able to practice my fine motor skills. Also motivated me to learn to read the wind so much better lol. But seriously can't beat the price to shoot. No recoil no fuss. If I wanna sit back and try some groups once the fams asleep sit at the table and shoot till I'm out of air.
AirForce guns are good from what I've read. Lots of choices! Good luck!

I know, I am thinking of getting the airforce in 25 cal.
But these guns you can change them to another cal.
It is no longer just the red rider

:) With a powerhouse air gun you don't need to worry about reloading supplies, just buy the bullets :D Now you will have the initial investment in a charging unit, but that's all, no powder, no primers,  and no cases. ??? I just need to handle one, as some are a bit  heavy. :P

This is not my rifle yet. The guy that makes airforce air rifles owns and uses my rifle rests.  But this is the gun I am going to get soon but can not afford the scope yet.
But would make a great night gun for in barns for raccoons or close shots at fox in 25 cal.

Post by: Misterjake23 on December 25, 2013, 03:20:49 AM
I have been following the comments on this post since the beginning.  Here's my question.....  How loud are these powerful air guns?  I have an air gun that shoots .177 cal pellets, and it cracks just as loud as a .22 cal rifle.  I know some of the Gammo air rifles have a silencer built in at the end to make them quiter.  Is that the way these super charged air rifles are?  Just how quiet / loud are they???
Title: Re: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Buckwheat on December 25, 2013, 03:50:50 AM
MJ
You are correct with the sound. The one in the picture has a silencer type barrel on it. If you shoot it at subsonic speed it is ok. But, yes at full power air air rifles do crack. I do not know how loud this one is at full power.
Title: Re: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Misterjake23 on December 25, 2013, 05:25:33 PM
So if you shoot it at subsonic speeds, I have to assume the maximum effective range is going to be very limited...maybe 50 yards???  Other than shooting barnyards rats and close squirrels that are getting into your bird feeders, what advantage is there to spending that kind of money for one?  (other than cheap and fun to shoot)

I'm simply trying to figure out why I would need one???

Me too trying to figure out why I would need one.
I think there is no reason to have one for me other then to play with. I could just purchase a cheaper one. But probably will not. Every time I buy somthing cheap I end up spending the money for the good one anyway. So it cost me a lot more in the end.

Hey guys hope everyone is keeping warm! As for how much noise these things make
Well my Mrod .25 is very very quiet I honestly think the only loud part is
When 43gr pellet smacks the target. Much quieter than even the super subsonic .22.
And I'm still learning alot about tuning for best performance. I love pyramydair and
I think their customer service is great! So many choices out there as far as
Calibre and use. Be safe all and happy hunting!

Since there was a case overturned by a fed. appeals court concerning BATF rules covering suppressors and air rifles the BATF has no jurisdiction over air rifles. That being said I wouldn't want to be the first test case as to attaching a suppressor to an air rifle. If you have any powder burners in your home and there is any conceivable way the suppressor can be attached your screwed. BUT there are devices legally being sold as Lead Dust Collectors, ldc's for short. Everyone knows what they really are but so far they are legal to purchase for air rifles. Just google them and buy yourself one. Or you can spend the $200 and get the stamp. I have them mounted them on all my air rifles and they do a pretty good job.TKO air guns and Clague air strippers are two of the best and as I said can legally be purchased w/o a tax stamp. All my ldc's are thread on and none of my pb's are not. I've already been down that road and they are legal. I just don't shoot them in public that much and try not to draw attention.
Title: Re: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Misterjake23 on December 31, 2013, 03:59:07 AM
If a suppressor is illegal on air rifles, then how does Gamo get away with selling them already on their guns from the factory??
Title: Re: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Hern on January 01, 2014, 05:45:11 AM
I use an air rifle for all the mentioned above.
Own about 10-15 years.

Buckwheat, not sure what I have but think it Chez made. Small power scope. Basic, does the job.
At times it comes in handy for certain jobs. But mainly sits in the corner.

It's nice to have a new toy, but how long you going to play with it?
Title: Re: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Cskypup on January 01, 2014, 01:57:53 PM
From what I understand its all in the articulation and wording. What's on air rifles isn't really a "silencer" but a shroud with baffles.
They definitely make em quieter but not silent. As in an earlier posting as long as the FPS is subsonic there isn't a crack. Most of the
sound my Mrod makes is from the hammerspring I think. Regardless I can shoot in my backyard and my neighbors have yet to
notice. I just got some Eun Jin .43gr pellets that were absolutely devastating while clearing out some feral critters from my friends
barn. I am still amazed at the KE this air rifle produces! Made some red mist out of more than a few rats in the silo lol. Helping out a few farmers like this opened up some more fur stands! Once Buckwheat starts shooting these silent machines I'm sure he'll be hooked lol.

I owned a few BB and pellet guns. Still have a pump pellet rifle somewhere.  LOL
What I found was I enjoyed shooting them. But none of them shot to the level of shooting I liked and I lost interest.  These airforce air guns say under an inch at 75 yards. I have shot rifles that could not do that. Accurate rifles are fun to shoot.I have a archery and shooting range in my house and in my yard. It might get used a little more. The crossbow slowed up my archery shooting, maybe the pellet gun will get used.
Might even help me stay sharper when shooting wile hunting.

That's a great point Buckwheat the ability to keep your shooting skills on point.  Being able to step out in the garage for a few minutes of trigger therapy makes me much more successful in putting fur down.  I was at the gun club the other night shooting my Mrod with my son.  We were shooting inside at the indoor bb gun range and I was able to put 16 pellets almost all in the same hole.  My sons grouping was nearly as good as mine but he's still learning lol.

The more you shoot the better you can get.

As long as the suppressor is an integral part of the weapon it is legal to sell. Same as a powder burner. if the suppressor is welded/permanently attached to the weapon you can purchase the whole package w/o the tax stamp. That's how Gamo can get away with selling the weapon with the suppressor attached. Plus there is a fine line between suppression and changing the pitch of the sound waves after discharge. With the Marauder the baffle system is part of the shroud which is integral/designed into the weapon. BUT if you add/remove or reshape any of the baffles then you've just committed a felony. Stupid isn't it? That's how Neal Clague and TKO get around the law. By changing the pitch of the weapons report. Not necessarily reduce the SPL of the discharge.

Well I ended up getting the airforce condor and a 4500 psi air tank.
I just started shooting it a little. This thing is like shooting a rifle. I shot at a 2x4s with a target on it and shot through the 2x4 at 15 yards. I think at and indoor range on a table I could keep them in the same hole but not free hand. I might need more practice.

Just read in Predator Xtreme = Airgun Roundup interesting  ??? The one that caught my eye was the Umarex Octane...Googled the company and they also make it in 22 cal. at 1250 fps...MSRP $281..... :-X :-X I could do some serious bird feeder protection with that. :o :o :o

I did not get to read that mag yet.
The weight of the pellet is important to know when they give speeds. I can shoot up to 32 gr pellet that the gun you mentioned my not be able to shoot that heavy of a pellet.

Title: Re: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Pa Goosehntr on March 12, 2014, 09:59:46 AM
 ??? ??? They didn't give a pellet weight;
Brand: Umarex
Caliber: 0.22 (5.5 mm)
Ammo Type: Pellets
FPS w/Alloy Pellet: 1250
FPS w/Lead Pellet: 1050

for all I intend on shooting, this may fit the bill, however, you have given me some food for thought  :-\ :-\

Shooting these new high power PCP airguns is so much.fun! My one big hope is that the PA Game comm takes a good look and starts to allow their use for hunting in PA. Cost benefit comes in when I can go to the range and shoot 300-500 pellets for about $15. It's not cheap to start but once you have all the essentials pellets are cheap. Benefit is lots and lots of trigger time!

Depending on pellets my best group was with .43gr Eunjin pellets prone unsupported indoors at 10yds was 1/4" and 1/2" @ 25yds. My Mrod is still bone stock and I wanna chrony it with a tune up. I've shot barn rats at 50yds with Pred Polymag causing a fine red mist to disperse with a fairly predictable pattern lol

This is me trying different pellets and air pressure at 13 yards. Most of these have 5 pellets in groups. I can not wait to try some at 50 yards.

hey guys, I have been wanting to get into PCPs for a while and one question I have is what do you use to refill the tank? I know that you can use a scuba gear or a hand pump. What do you guys use or think works the best?

The hand pump is to hard for me. I would spend to much time filling the tank.
If you shoot alot get 4500 lb carbon fiber tank.  Price is 400 to  700
Getting started can cost alot.but once set up you can shoot a lot. Read as may posts you can find and watch YouTube videos.

I have been looking at the airforce condor rifle and was wondering if any of you guys had experience with the rifle? Another question is what caliber to get because I would mainly use the rifle for target shooting and pest control( opossums, pigeons, skunks, etc)?

I have the condor but am new to shooting these powerful guns. I too am just learning about them. Learning how to tune them is tricky at first. But today I finally tuned 32 gr pellets flying at1050 fps just under the speed of sound to group pretty good. This gun blows me away. I never thought a pellet gun can shoot so good. I am now shooting 30 yards and almost looks like one big ripped hole is possible.

Just like with powderburners everyone has a preference. My first is the Mrod .25cal but I've been really looking at my next one
Will prob be a Kricket .25cal talking to the guys at Pyramyd air they're telling me this is the cats behind especially for a bullpup
style rifle....bit expensive but lots of bang for the buck. IMO the way to go for pest control is a PCP air rifle.....nothing wrong with spring guns or even nitro piston just like the shots per fill of a PCP airgun
Title: Re: Powerfull Air Rifles
Post by: Buckwheat on March 17, 2014, 08:57:22 AM
Cskypup
Kricket, more then I will spend. It can not shoot any better then what I have now. If it is better it sure can not be by much.
But I to like the pcp airforce air guns. A lot more adjustments to make it shoot better then a springer and no big twang of a spring.
That mrod you are shooting is a good shooter, why would you even want to change.

Only want to add to my collection lol....that is a pricey gun and I like the short bullpup size. Some of the
more urban spots I hunt make it difficult to sneak in with a fullsize rifle. The
Kricket I could put in my pack and no-one would know I went in to hunt lol

Is your Mrod wood or plastic stock?  I have been shooting a 350 magnum springer and looking to venture into the PCP guns.  The Benji Mrod is highly rated and I have spoken to a few guys that own them and they are all very happy with them.  Just trying to decide whether or not to go wood or plastic in the 25 cal.

Bill sorry for the delay I've been off the grid for awhile.  My Mrod is the wood stock but if I would do it over I'd go with the synthetic.  Still love this beast. Spent the summer popping rats in barns my farthest shot was 57 yards using the .43gr eunjin and boy is it fun!
