Title: Help needed making coon boards
Post by: Fatdawg on September 25, 2016, 06:54:04 PM
I've been working on making some wooden stretchers using the NAFA guide.
Have my cat and canines done.
Currently working raccoon, I'm in the Eastern and Semi Heavy section.
Everybody suggests that I make small, medium, large and x large.
What dimensions do I use for these variations.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Fatdog
Here are some sizes I found for sale you can use as a reference.

The solid coon boards have two sizes.  Standard are for your medium to large coon.  The jumbo are for your xlarge to 4 XLarge Coon.  The standard size boards are 48 inches long x 7 3/4 inches wide x 1/2 inch thick.  The jumbo size boards are 54 inches long x 8 3/4 inches wide x 1/2 inch thick.  The wedges are 40 inches long.

I posted on huntingpa what I used. I hope that answered your question.
I use 7 1/2" for most Coon. But I only keep medium to xxxxlg.
Just seems like the right size for my central Pa. Coon. Plus my lot of Coon look uniform and present a good appearance to the fur buyer.

The larger width boards of 8" and up are used in the Mid-West where Coon are much heavier in weight & larger body.

Hern,
Yes I seen your reply and thank you.
Here's the current dilemma, The NAFA book give these dimensions, 5"@11", 7'-7 1/2" @ 30" and 8" @ 54.
So do I want the 30" dimension to be 7 1/2" to the end?

I kinda jumped the gun and sold all my wire stretchers already.

I understand and agree with using one board on these Bedford coon for uniformity. I only kept 7 of the coons I caught last year and don't plan on targeting them this year as well.

Thanks!

I guess what I really should be asking is if anyone can give me the dimensions of their solid raccoon boards?

Right on 7 1/2" @ 30". I think my Coon boards are 48" long. They are 7 1/2" from 30" to end of board.

7 1/2" looks off in picture, but is spot on with eyeball.
I posted another picture on huntingpa.
