Long Range Rifles

I'd like to someday get a very long range rifle.  The 6.5 Creedmoor has really caught my eye from the things I have read shooting out to 1,000 yards.  Then again, I do have a .243 Win. and I am not sure if the 6.5 would be a big enough step up for long range to justify it in the stable.  Anyone shoot a 260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, or the 6.5x284 Laupa?  Figure these are pretty good with wind drift and accurate.  Plus, I could get an AR-10 in a 6.5 as well and load for both like the .223 Rem.

What rifles do you guys think are tops for long range.

I don't have the money now as a .223 would probably be next in the stable but really have my eye on the Savage Model 12 Long Range Hunter.

A .243 will reach out to 1000yds with the right weight bullet and twist in the gun. A guy close to me swears by the 6.5x284. There are alot of wildcats out there as well that are good for pong range use

I'm very familar with the 260 Rem but not the 264 win mag?

   You will find the 264 Win Mag mostly out west.  It is a flat long range shooter mostly for deer size game. However, when you started talking 6.5s I just had to throw out the 264...had one and made a big mistake by trading it... In your research don't over look the ¼ calibers such as the 257 Roberts, 25-06....they be flat shooters also, with the 25-06 being a good one on distance.

I have four 25.06's, Ruger #1, Remington 700 BDL, Remington Sendero (not longer produced) and a custom 25.06AI.  All are shooters at extreme ranges.  The Sendero will print one hole at 100 yards and a clover leaf at 300.  With these old eyes I no longer shoot competition but the Sendero and AI have no problems at 1,000 meters -- with younger eyes.

Having said all that it's hard to beat the old tried and proven .308

Ya need to know that the 7mm08 is just a necked down 308 case as is the 243....don't kick the 308 too far as it has produced some great off springs. The 308 can be loaded up or down in bullet weights depending on the targeted critter..

If I'm not mistaken I think the .308's have won most of the long distance shooting events at Camp Perry.  At least they did when I was shooting -- but that was in the early to mid 60's.  They also were the caliber of choice for most of the military snipers, again when I went through the sniper course in the mid-sixties.

The .308 is certainly a great caliber I'm just not into it.  I think it will start to fade if the 6.5 calibers take off.

All I can say about that huge gun....ouch!  Wouldn't want to be downrange.

Only ever shot one sniper rifle 50 and that was at a 1000 meters with HE....awesome!!! but I bet it's hard to get any HE in the civilian world??  Stuff would be tough on chipmunks...
