Title: hand calls?
Post by: 204 hunter on January 25, 2014, 11:21:25 AM
I'm looking to get some hand call anyone have any suggestions on a couple to start out with? I was looking at foxpros Dillon premium and field series of calls. I have heard that the griz n gray and backstabber are great calls.

Check out Our sponsor page and look on Bee's O'Briens link. He makes some awesome calls. The firefly rabbit distress is a hell of a good sounding call, plus his calls are all hand made.

I've used Bee's O'Brein's fireflies and have called in quite a few reds.  I had one come within 5 yards of me!  I was on a set this year using my foxpro with no results.  I switched over to the Cottontail firefly and  brought one in.  I like the firefly cottontain for reds.  It is a closed reed with great sound.  I always have one with me.

Any thing that you can make sound like a prey in distress will work.
Everyone has different preferences, including ecallers and blown calls.
Good luck

OK thanks guys it can get a little overwhelming looking at all the calls available. I have a wildfire 2 but I haven't been to successful this year and its getting late in the season just wanted to try something new. What is the price difference between a mass produced call and a hand made call.

The prices vary widely. Best suggestion is to shop around and see what you find.  I did see that foxpro has the backstabber for 45-49. Bee's has most of his calls around 20-25.  Send him a pm for prices.

Yea the foxpro calls seem pretty pricey if you can by calls off of bees for that price!

Bees makes some really great calls, you can't go wrong with any of his. The griz n grey and backstabber whe a little pricier are some really nice calls themselves.

Can’t go wrong with any of Ernie’s calls
His first four call set:

One he made for my daughter out of her first deer:

This one never leaves the Blazer:

His open reed calls work pretty good also:

I could post dozens of pictures with dead stuff from his calls, but I don't want him to get a big head

I don't see any EW calls listed.  Are they just special order?

I don't think he makes them much anymore.  Probably would have to get one off somebody who already has one.

Yep ernies calls are one of a kind.  nothing sounds like a custom call.  IMO he sold em way cheap as well for a true custom call.  I have three closed reeds and one howler.  I misplaced the howler somewhere and haven't seen it for a while.  Which upsets me a good bit.

A custom call is a lot more then just a pretty turn job.  A true custom call has tuned reeds and sounds awesome.  I have a open reed from brad gainey that is awesome.

Ben you are correct there. I have a custom howler from Bigben that I just love as well as a custom howler from Bees that I also love these are my go to howlers along with some diaphragms that were made for me by lookn4fur and also bees
