1 stand tonight, 1 coyote
« on: November 13, 2009, 09:51:28 PM »
On the way home from work today i stopped at a farm that i once hunted for ducks, big swamp.  has some nice fields around it.   talked with the new owner and no problems to hunt predators.  my buddy canceled hunting tonight but something told me to give it a try.

shotgun yote, 34lb female

thanks guys, i appreciate it, yeah eastern coyote book coming soon. lol.

woody,

funny how the hunters intuition kicks in,  i paced around the house not wanting to go but knowing for some reason i should try it.   jackie and forrest kept saying go, go, and yes the Dodge of Death strikes again.

i believe my teacher is writing the book, anything that i would write would be stolen info, may end up in court. lol....

this one was a gift,  i just regained permission on this farm 5 minutes from the house, the wind was wrong, i only went out to try and call in a grey fox just to be on the farm again.   i got there, knew the wind was wrong so i used some natural barriers to my advantage,  i put the call in this small field and a big swamp was right infront of me about 100 yards or so..   i started with jackrabbit for one minute and switched right over to grey fox pup, within 1/2 a minute i had eyes coming out of the swamp on a dead run to the caller.  i let it get about 25 yards away when i threw up the gun, it saw me and stopped, i had 2 3/4 #4 shot copper plated in the first barrel, i figured at that range it would be not problem, i hit her right behind the shoulder and she wasn't even phased, she started back where she came from, i hit her again this time with 3in BB from the second barrel and flipped her a couple of times she went a little bit further and died.  she was the only one that came in.  i was  gone from the house for about 20 minutes.  sometimes i think the hunting Gods look down and say boy he can use an easy one today.   This was that type of hunt.

i have always though a .17 hmr would knock a coyote flat but after the year we have had so far, they are one tough animal and they can take a hit.

i keep it at full power,  one thing i have been doing this year is keeping the halo higher in the air, you will still see the eyes and i don't drop it on them until i am ready to shoot.  this has made a big difference imo.
