Pa Goosehntr:
After seeing what fur was selling for in WVa...and the variations in prices...I'm not sure what the true market prices are here on the east coast.. ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Hern:
I forgot to bring Squirrel tails to the sale.
I'll have to take a trip to Dutch this week.

Hern:
I hate selling fur...lol Worst part of this business for me.
I sell some at local fur auction, some at local buyers and ship some to NAFA.
I try to study the market plus talk to buyers before & during the season. Then decide where and what to sell. I try not to take a big hit.
I try to turn a profit and think of fur as a part-time business. Don't get me wrong, I love taking fur, putting up fur and being outdoors, that's what I do. But, profit is just part of fur taking for me.
The past few seasons I'm not turning a profit, but can't stay away...lol.

Misterjake23:
I can't believe just how low the fur prices dropped.  The "poor" man can't afford to hunt or trap for fur any more.  With gas prices going up,  a person afford to hunt any trap.  He'll go broke.

Hern:
jake, agree a man can't make a living just by trapping or hunting. But a poor man can go hunting or trapping. The poor man just can not depend on fur as his single income.

The professional trappers I know have side jobs. Others are in it full time by selling/making lure, supplies, writing books and nowadays, making how-to videos.  Others are fishing guides or big game guides or do ADC work, on the side.
Some pro trappers I know do very little trapping because of their successful lure/supply business. Just before the season and during the seasons in different parts of the county, lure makers don't have time to run a line, they have to tend to business and ship orders on daily basis.
Professional predator callers have other side jobs too. Some are have sponsors. Some sell how-to videos.
Just can't make ends meet nowadays depending on a fur check. Fur pro's depend on other revenue.
Having said that, These same pro's run their lines like a business, maximizing the profit where they can.
