Scope power...What variable is just right for predator hunting?
« on: January 17, 2012, 01:54:25 PM »
I read a lot of articles... Read one just yesterday about 3 X 9 power scopes not being the just right variable power for night hunting...Author claimed that for close shots that a 2 is better then 3 and a 12 or 14 would be better then the 9.  I often wondered for rifling not shotgunning that maybe the 6 X 18 would be nice..I don't own that power so I really don't know...

I do have a Weaver 2 X 10 variable power on my 24V..When I have to use the shotgun the 2 power does work great...

Im a big fan of 4-12, rarely at night is the adjustment past 5, but I also use this rifle for groundhogs and targets so I like the added magnifcation.

I'd love to look through a scope thats say a 4-12, and one thats say, 5-16 or something like that... see which I could find a practical application for.

I'm on the market too so its hard to get a good idea for what I'm looking for you know.

3X9 Is ok,That is what I have been using. Most of the time its set on 5 or 6.If you plan on long range shots 150 yards or more a 4x12 would be nice.Consider a 30mm tube versus a 1inch,widens your field of view quite a bit.

I like my 4x12. But I have no problem at night with my 1.5x5. Mostly my shots are within 100 yards.

4.5-14 is what a friend of mine recommended to me.

I have a 3X9 on my .223 that is usually on 3 or 4 power at night. I have a 4.5X14 on my 30-06 that is rarely on anything higher than 6 power. I just find that if it's higher than that my target acquisition is harder. Maybe it's just me, don't know but that seems to work for me.
