Questions from a Noob...
« on: February 14, 2011, 07:36:50 PM »
Being a noob at this Predator Hunting, we have some major problems where we hunt, I was wondering if anyone could give me and my buddies some pointers.

We are going to be getting a FoxPro call in the next two week but we want to get out this weekend, we are going to pick up some gear this weekend.

Any advice would be great...Thanks all.

If you have a group of buddies you can always drive for coyotes like you drive for deer.. However suggest that you all wear orange if you do this..If you know there are coyotes in a woodlot or on the side of the mountain a good old fashion drive can harvest one or two...Locate them with a siren the night before.. At sunup put your drive on.. hunting by CALLING with a bunch of buddies usually ends up in failure.. I'd break up into teams.. Maybe 3 in each team at most unless everyone understands just what their job is during the calling scenario... You have guys that move on you after you put them into postion you already lost...

If any advice for new callers... You can't call coyotes if they are not there .. try locating them with a siren the night before.. When they howl back sneak back in the morning and try some calling or put on a drive.. At least you know the coyotes are probably in the area.

Again I stress in large numbers on drives to have the drivers and the shooters wear orange..

My advice is to read as much as you can on this site and others like it. Sign up for hunts like the ones Cresson Sportsmans and Mosquito Creek have, and talk to/meet as many people as possible. Pick their brains. Get out into the woods. Trial by fire seems to be the best way to go, but the other stuff will help lessen the learning curve. Also, don't forget that when you've become a much wiser, and more effective caller/hunter, to pay it forward.
I'm still learning myself and just joined the board, but have been killing foxes with a call since I started hunting in 1988 when I was 12. The guys here definitely know whats up and I've learned a lot already. Welcome.

what kind of problems are you having?  are you calling in critters?

We are getting all kind of critters around but no deer we see some tracks and some bleeding, but there are far more yote tracks then there are deer tracks.

So we are getting into hunting the yotes.

I think the problem he's talking about is the hurting being put on the deer by the coyotes.
That's why he's hunting the dogs.
Amirite?

SongDog is right, we have only seen a couple deer all year, so we are going to try to get some of the yotes out of the area.

BigBen, we are just getting into the calling and such should know more after the weekend.

I suggest you read as much as you can.  Watch your wind and good luck.
