having trouble this year
« on: December 24, 2009, 07:07:12 PM »
I am having the worst year ever calling fox. I have tried everything I can think of and I still haven,t called in a fox. I called in 2 coon lastnite, I had the coyote,s howling and coming in last weekend but no fox. I know they are around,I see tracks, scat and seen them befroe the season came in. I tried rabbit, grey fox pup, rodent, bird in distress, with a decoy and without. anyone have any suggestions that mite help me.

calling starts to get a little bit tougher this time of year...and it only gets tougher. only things i can suggest is to minimize your calling and stay on stand about 10min longer than you normally do. you may be calling a pressured area and not know it...the fox may be abit apprehensive about coming to the call...so give them less calling series to keep thier curiosity up...and give them plenty of time to get to you.
i was just out calling tonight...called in 3 and all of them showed up right around the 10min mark. no shots presented but they sure didnt come in like they did a month ago. 2 of the three sneaked in through hedgerows only showing eyes every 30yds or so through the brush...and the 3rd held up on me out about 150yds on posted pasture. none of them got downwind of me and none of them barked at me neither....i'll give them a whirl again next week from a different set-up area with different sounds. baby cottontail mixed with coaxing sounds brought all 3 in tonight.
oh, one other thing..the moon is growing brighter this week...keep to the shadows and stay out of open terrain.
good luck and dont give up! ;)

Ive had the same problem this season.  Went out monday found 6 fresh sets of fox tracks, scat, and a fresher rabbit kill, but had no luck calling fox in.  Did call in 1 coyote to about 70-80 yards with no shot offered,  I had my shotgun.  It came in to baby cottontail after no more than 2 minutes into the setup
