Coyote's and what to do...

I got my first coyote last year during deer season on state game lands. Since then I bought a new rifle, scope and calls for this year. I also got my bobcat permit after 6 years of trying. My question is... when I go to my deer stand in archery season right before dusk and just before dawn I hear anywhere from 2 to 3 packs of coyotes howling with anywhere from 5 to 10 animals in each pack. They are at least 1 to 2 miles away. Can I call them in from my stand or do I have to get closer. I have seen coyotes from my treestand but have not tried to call them in yet. This year I'm going for broke but it is wooded and not open. Will they come in to my stand if I call or do I have to get closer to them. Thanks Icecube

I would try to close the distance.  Sounds like they are gearing up for the nights hunt and you are hearing a group yip howl.  That is probably thier core area and spend most of thier time in that area which is good for you.  If you can sneak in early and get set up no more than a coupl hundred yards that would be ideal.  You are going to have to watch the wind while sneaking in.  Try to keep it in your face and set up high on them if you can.  Watch the down wind side and don't over call.  If you don't see anything, sneak out the same way you snuck in, QUIET!  Good Luck.............Tim

For me to close the distance I'll have to try to get 4 or 5 people to give me permission. I don't think they will mind as I hope to do this when they are not there. My days off are Mon and Tues and most of the camps are gone on Sunday. Only 2 of the properties have fields and I have permission to hunt one of them. Thanks for the info....Icecube

at the end of an archery hunt is a great time to call, you have been on stand and the place is completely quiet and your scent should be high enough off the ground.   i would stay in the stand and when they start up i would challenge them one time and see what kind of response you get.  if they challenge you back i would not call anymore and would sit tight for at least 45 minutes, they will cover a mile to get to you if you are on their turf.

Yes at the end of an archery is a great time, but the thermals will be dropping back to the ground.  Make sure you have some scent neutralizer or cover scent to spray.
