Coon Calling
« on: July 19, 2009, 03:24:01 PM »
Ok Ive been trapping ever since i could walk and hunting predators for the past 10 yrs.  Now ive killed plenty of foxes and called coyotes while I guided in Idaho, but Ive never tried calling coons.  I have lots of locations where coon are abundant and would like to give it a try.  Any suggestions? Thanks

like leglifter said look for corn water and den trees also.  get yourself a copy of the dennis kirk coon puppies tape and just let r rip.  they will either come to the top of a tree and look or come in.

Or take Ben hunting with you.  He blows the best Raccoon Distress I ever heard!!
"Predators are either active & feeding, semi-active & callable, or utterly inactive & then practically speaking, no call is needed; we're just taking our guns for a walk. We can & should get used to it, & follow their leed cuz they just ain't eager nor apt to follow our’s any time soon!

Now with the coon fight will you mostly call only the large boars or will all respond.

What's the most realistic sounding coon hand call available?

I use a critrcall standard and trill my tounge along with putting back pressure on the reed by cupping my hands and then working them till I get the right sound.  but for a closed reed any deeper cottontail or jack rabbit reed works fine for me.  I think I used THO's bonker call that day for that comp and it has a jack reed in it.

Thanks Ben, I need to practice some more to get it right. When I call I can't tell if I'm calling a coon or a crow. That's why I need to practice a lot more. The first time I tried to call a coon, crows came in. I thought that was kind of odd.

By the way, don't ask me what "slats" are. That's something my mother used to say to me all the time cause I was always doing something wrong.
