I always keep an eye out for pointed fecal matter on rocks and or bales of hay when I am out shrooming, chuck hunting, or shooting doves.... That would be extent of scouting..When I see that I know red fox are in the area and they will be living there.
Coyotes are roamers....Find scat and it means nothing... Kind of like they were there but since they move so much....Best to go out and locate them at night time or listen for their howls...Then sneak back next morn and call. Or get good info from farmers or people having problems with coyotes....Then you know they are in the area....
if I was going to hunt blindly in another county for coyotes...I would hunt near a large river or near a stream,,, a swamp,...Also if I knew where there was an abundance of prey animals then I would call there too...Find the deer and you will find the coyotes....Places that are good for rabbit hunting will also have an abundance of predators around.....
If you could just find their, coyotes Core areas...They tend to hang around Core areas a lot...Core areas are areas that have food of course and are near water....
When you go out of county and hunt blindy in other counties and do not have a chance to scout....Head and call along the water or swamps. You could spend a few day light hours of the week-end looking for fox scat (Hunt Grouse) when you go out of town...Then return at night to call too....
