« on: January 23, 2012, 03:37:18 PM »
Just getting started with the asking for permission to hunt quest, and not doing so well. Did get some pointers from our Pres.  Anybody have some more pointers they might share with a newbie ???

Saturdays is your best bet around noon time not to interfere with work and definately not on sunday at any time of the day, for most farmers it is thier day of rest and church. I always start the conversation by introducing myself and saying something along the lines of "Hi, my name is DJ, and I was curious to know if you had any predator issues on your property, as in coyotes, fox, and coons. Most farmers have coon issues in their barns and if they have chickens, i'm sure they've rained the hen house a few times for eggs or for chickens themselves. If they are a big deer hunter, they may possibly invite you in to hunt coyotes, but maybe not until the deer season is over, I hear that a lot. Either way thats another late season location to call. Some guys want you to take them out hunting with you, I never have a problem with that. I have a few places that like me to call them before I leave for the night. One particular place is a golf course, that the manager askes if I at least drop him a message so if the neighboring trailerpark calls the cops that they heard gun fire, he knows he can tell the police he has predator hunters on the property and everything is A ok. Some people just won't let you on thier land even if you offer to do chores for them, which always helps. Always remember if you plan on night hunting for preds on their property to remind them that you do hunt at night, and it may be in your best interest to explain to then you're using light easily fragmenting bullets, and you always scout in the daylight to know where you're safe shots are during the night time. I always tell them I would like to night hunt, because they might not know that is how it is done, and if they see a suspicious car arriving in the middle of the night with a guy gettin out with a gun, they automatcially think you're doing something wrong(that could end in a few bad ways). The pres and I actually were confronted with an interesting woman last feburary, unknowingly that she was the un-offical "guard dog." Some people will just not let anyone on their property, in that case be a gentlemen and say thank you for thier time and sorry for bothering them. I also leave behind a buisness card with my name, address, and phone number on it in case they change thier minds or if you get permission a lot of the times they know other farmers that would like your services as well and they will let them know to call you! I've also got permission a few places after I asked to trap snapping turtles from a pond, and once i'm in doing that I get to talkin with them, and once they know you're a good guy you can open a lot of doors! Good luck, and always be curtious! Hope that helps a bit.

If any of the places you want to hunt are vegetable farms, Dont be afraid to throw in you also like to crow hunt. Veggie farmers have alot of problems with them that may be your one way in. I just got 600 acres this year because of that he wasnt interested in anything I was saying until I mentioned Crows. He called another farmer and I got a 2 fer 1 deal....

Wear clean jeans, clean shirt and coat, no camo. Maybe have the ole buggie cleaned up.
Be thankful and respectable.
If the owner is not home, Sometimes you may go back to the property 2-3-4 times before you catch him home.

Hardest part of trap'n or call'n, for me, is asking permission and sell'n fur, but I do it. ;D

If I'm asking on farms around the house here, I wear a hoodie with the high schools name on it that way they are more at ease walking up to them because they know right away that you are a neighbor even though they may not know you right now.

some good info from people who know so i don't have much to add that wasn't already said, but i will say, once you start gaining permission take care of them.  if you have to give up a saturday in the summer to bail hay it goes a long way.  every year around christmas, i give a small bag with some inexpensive gifts to all of the farmers.  if they have a dog make sure you throw in some dog treats.  it goes a long way.

i always try to take some milkbones with me as well...as most farmers have dogs wandering around when you pull in and a little treat sometimes calms them down a little and they're not snarling at you until the farmer shows up, or jumping all over you...
