distance traveled?
« on: January 04, 2011, 08:45:14 AM »
This is something that I was thinking about last night.  I was on my way home last night from work around 4pm.  I had full intentions to head out at 5 to get in the field at 5:30.  and I kinda waited around till 6 because I got busy doing some work on the net.  I still went hunting however.  saw one fox that busted me with a nonexistent breeze turned the wrong way and gusted right towards him.  bye bye red.  Anyhow I kinda hung it up then not wanting to kill a fox that I might have the opportunity at this weekend.

which got me thinking about how easy it might be for certain people to give up a night on hunting based on their certain situation.  I have read on a few hunting boards where people travel sometimes in access of 3 hours out west to get to hunting ground.  That equates to me driving into the northern tier for a night of hunting.   and I got to thinking that maybe some are more lucky then they realize.  I can literally walk down my driveway and hunt for fox if I wanted to.  Benefits of living in the country.  but I have traveled over 100 miles to hunt other ground as well.  so how far do you drive to hunt predators.  That would be just fox and coyote.  whatever your quarry is.

Since it's fox season, I fortunatly can hunt for them righ behind my house.  It's 5C so I have to use a borrowed 22 Mag.  When hunting for coyotes I normally head up to around Beltsville area where I can use my .223.  In Montg county there are many farm lands, but all private.  Unless you get permission your stuck on PGL which I beleive are highly pressured so I normaly dont waste my time.  Beltsville is about 1 hour north of me.

I can hunt about 3 different places within 5 miles, but I also travel 50+ miles to camp.

I only have one private farm about 20mins away and then 2 co-ops.  There are numerous SGL near me as well.  I was hoping on going up state sometime to try the state forests.  I don't live very far from Whitefeather and it is hard to get on some of the private farms in Montco.

i can't quite hunt out my back door but, i probably could spend a whole night hunting and not go more than 8 miles from my house, i can name more than a dozen sets within a 5 mile radius from my house that i have at least scouted so far, open that radius to 15 miles and i am probably close to 50 sets that i could hit... that includes both public, gun club, and private ground.. with i'd say about 80% being private farms

I can't hunt out my back door here in southern Butler County, but I am finding some farms to hunt in the township and I frequently hunt my buddies place in Venango County which is about an hour and fifteen minute drive from the house. And Moraine State Park is not far from me.

Thanks.  That pic is a few years old and I set 2 traps there with the intent on getting the house in the background.  I will not post other pics but caught 2 greys there that year.  I set some traps on the other side of the house this year and had a miss with a coyote.  Just put some cable near that location a few days ago and hopefully have more to post.

I feel I'm very lucky to be able to walk out my door and call coon, red n grey fox, coyote, and cats.  When I lived in town I used to skin off the kids swing set.  The neighbors loved me....
