This weekends hunt
« on: November 14, 2010, 05:52:02 PM »
Dad and I got to the campsite around noonish on thursday afternoon.  We got camp set up and then did some hunting in the afternoon for some turkey and then did some calling as well.  We didnt see anything so we headed back to camp and made supper.  After getting some warm grub we headed out do some night stands.  It was pretty bright but I called anyhow.  We ended up finding some elk out in the one field and then called it a night shortly after.

The next morning we got up and after some coffee and cinnamon rolls we made some daylight stands.  Called in some crows and some bluejays but no predators showed up.  My cousin and my uncle were on their way north so we went back and made some brunch.  After a filling meal of eggs, bacon, and homefrys.  We did some scouting and circled back to the truck.  My uncle and cousin had shown up and got their camp setup.  We did some grouse hunting through out the afternoon.  We only flushed two grouse all afternoon.  We got back to camp and made some supper of fresh chukar breasts and thighs on the grill.  After eating we got ready to do some night hunting.  We found some very good sign earlier in the day and I decided to hit it right away.

We got setup on the first stand and I started some calling on the griz n gray.  I got about a minute into the stand and a set of eyes appeared on the pine trees to the right and he walked right down onto the road.  I told my cousin to turn the light on and shoot.  It was a grey at 60 yards standing looking right towards us.  At the sound of the rifle the fox hit the ground and started to move around a bit.  I quickly ran to him to make sure he wasn't getting away.  He was DRT and didnt need a follow up shot.  A few congrats and we kept calling.  We ended up finding some more elk and that was it for the night.  We went back to camp to skin the grey and take it easy the rest of the night.

The next morning we got up at daylight and did a few stands but nothing showed.  We came back and made brunch of pancakes and homefrys and then loaded up and headed to Renovo for the luncheon.  After the luncheon we got back a hour before dark and we prepared for the night of calling ahead of us.  We called till 9 and called it and night and went back to camp to eat a supper of chukar soup and sausages.

We woke up this morning and did a bit of crow calling but mostly just took in everything.  The quietness of the great vastness the wilds have to offer.  The weather was perfect and both my uncle and cousin had a blast.  Both dad and I had a great time as well.  Although only one grey came to the calling I was happy.  I hope this can become a tradition for my family through out the years.  Dad and I used to go to the same campsite we stayed at this weekend back when I was 12 and we had done that till about 4 years ago.  It was great to get back to the old times and enjoy myself with the family.  The only pic I took all weekend was this one.

Its funny my cousins daughter keeps telling everyone her daddy killed a wolf this past weekend.  Thanks to the ppha and the people in the organization.  Thanks to curt and the other donators of the door prizes this weekend.  I don't know who won we were already on our way home at checkin time.  if it wasn't a pain to drag the camper there I would have stopped by.

we always eat well when we go to camp UB.  8)  just ask around.  but no campfire.  when you stay in the state forests they don't allow campfires during certain times of the year.

well he was.  he was intimidated so much by the awesomeness sound of the grizz n grey he came out of the trees with his paws in the air and agreed to be photographed.  but I didn't think you guys would believe that so I said we shot em.   ;D
