Title: Gambrels
Post by: Hern on March 23, 2016, 08:26:56 AM
How do you hang your fur to skun out?
Do you use cord or a gambrel?

Here's a picture of my first official gambrel (bottom). I used binder twine up until then.
Top gambrel is one I made lately. Same design, but a bit wider.

These are Speed gambrels. Top one I bought. Bottom one I made.
I will be using Speed gambrel next season.

Here's a chocker gambrel I bought. I made one a bit larger that's not pictured.
Bottom is a Chicken/Turkey gambrel. Some guys use these for fur.

Whats the dimensions on the speed gambrel you made Hern?  I may have to make one of those.

Goose, that's an oldie. Looks like a pain it the pants with the wing nuts.

Lookn4dimensions,
1/4" steel
2 1/2" wide
4 1/4" x 4" x 41/4"
V cuts, top- 1 1/2" bottom- 1/4"
Ends are angle upward. Looks like 30 degree or so.

Lookn4abetterway, you have to ring ankles & start legs before hanging on Speed gambrel.

When I started, I use binder twine with slip knot. Hung by one leg. Skun for years with one back leg. Then I bought first gambrel in pic #1. Then tried different rigs since then.
Warm days trapping before work, I would skun at the end of the line. Cord tied to choker, hung by one back leg. Cord over limb, end tied to tree.
Goose, if I find a faster way to do things, I change. Especially during fur season.
I built a prep table to ring ankles & legs. Turn around, there is the gambrel. If I save one or two minutes skun'n, that add up to more sets I can make or more sleep.
That's why I posted about gambrels. Alot of guys overlook a speedier, time saving way to hang a critter, .

I use the choker type but I also like the looks of the speed gamble. Might have to make one of those for next season.
