Title: Fox family last spring
Post by: coon hunter on February 27, 2014, 07:22:01 AM
A friend had a family of foxes in their field last year and one of the parents brought dead crows to the den, and it seemed to have killed the litter. Crow hunting has grown around here I wonder if these guys letting them lay with lead in is hurting our fox population also. Your thoughts.

Maybe if the fox were from California. But I don't think it would hurt PA fox   :)

Crows may have been killed with a poison (illegal), thrown on a dump heap, and the fox carried them back to the den...

I think one of my fillings is really a bb from a rabbit I ate.

Serious note, poison is a possibility. I believe rats or other animals that died from poison could form a chain.

Thought I read last year where a eagle ate a crow shot with lead and became very ill or died.

Coon hunter:  Imagine that.  Someone watched an Eagle eat a Crow and then followed him/her, saw it get sick and die.  I'd bet you read it in an anti-hunting article.  Want to buy a Bridge?  Dick

Seems it happens a good bit and crow hunting has picked up in my area. Maybe it's time to change to steel shot.

So I wonder how many fox we do loose to dead crows being taken to the dens. May be a good reason for the PGC to change it to steel. Since the lead plants our shut down we probably wont see lead much longer anyway.

;) ;) Coonhunter you are correct in the last lead smelter was shut down  ??? ??? ??? however, the lead we use  is mainly from recycled sources , so we have many moons of lead to work with  8) 8) 8) 8)
