Title: Skinning a yote
Post by: war_nrg on October 04, 2011, 02:42:24 PM
Greetings
Found this skinning video on the web.  Wish I had seen it prior to my first skinning

Cheers,

Very good video!  He talks about using a t-bar for the arm pit area and on most of my coyotes I need to use something.  Lately I have been using my knife sharpening steel.  Another area I find hard to peel is the brisket area.  For this I apply steady pressure and pound it with a hammer.  Coyotes sure don't want to give up their hide easily.... even after you bring em home.

Anyone ever make any of these or know a place where you can find out how to? Awesome video very informational.

Ryan.

7point asks...

7point, I can lend you an adjustable board(s) (Fox & Coyote), to use as a pattern. Not sure where I got 'em.
My boards have more of a bottle nose which gives a bit more lenght to the overall size.

I've always given my fur away, but this year I may try my hand at skinning and stretching a few rather than just passing them onto someone who's going to a sale.

Are these types of stretcher even worth the time to use as opposed to a metal model?

Ryan.

In my opinion wood is 10 times better than wire.

I'm in the process of making a horizontal skinner.  Should be interesting.

7pointmonster...
Here's the bottle nose (tapered) adjustable boards I use for Fox & Coyote. Note in the video the rounded head? I feel the taper gives a bit more lenght to a hide.

Here's a tapered and rounded nose Coyote board...

I may be a bit fussy.

If it works then why not be fussy?? Good pictures I'm sure you've had lots of experience with them, so its more a learned over time type deal.

I have to get me a skinning machine!  Those are some nice adjustable boards.  With yote prices what they were last year it might be worth using wood.

Renny, I was going to make a horizonal skinner. I gave it some thought and realized I would more than likely have stuff on the bench all the time and would have to clear when I wanted to use it!

I don't have the height I need to make it vertical without a major overhaul to the furshed or I probably would have although everyone I talk to that has a horizontal one wouldn't ever go back.  There are positives and negatives to both I suppose....

Anyway, the way I set this up it is 11 feet long which might not work for every coyote but it should be long enough for most of them without rehooking.  I bought a 440 / 880 lb cable hoist from Cabelas for 99 bucks and mounted it on this framework.

I made the framework wide enough for 3 -- 2 X 6's that can easily be removed.  When not in use I have all the room I had before instalation and made a place in the ceiling to store the boards.  See Hern, no place for beer cans....

The opposite end looks like this but I haven't put anything on it to hook critters to yet.  Haven't decided what to use at this time...

That is a serious setup, what happens if you rip it though? Or do you do the golfball method?

Most people use vise grips with widened jaws.  The skinning machines are mostly used for yotes and coon.  They both have tough skin.  Some people skin fox with them but I wouldnt.

You guys should look up videos on youtube of how to skin a deer with a golf ball. Would probablly do less fur damage than vise grips.

if this works it might clear things up for you.

Those Videos were awesome, I need to make one of those for foxes. that would make the entire process so much easier. Wow is all I can say.

My only concern is, if you shot them, that makes a weak point, so does that mean it would rip there?

Ryan.

Any kind of blemish on a hide and your chances of ripping it increase.  Bullet holes, old scars, and bite marks are a few examples.

7pointmonster, no need for a machine to skun Fox. They peel easy. I use my machine on Coyote and large Coon or a good Coon day and a long skun'n night.
I made my rig with electric hoist & vice grips(with 2" washers welded inside the jaws, for more grip).

I would like to point out that a boat trailer hoist works just as good as my electric hoist. Only dif is you have to hand crank and possiblely walk over to wall mounted crank. But no biggy, and easier on the pocketbook.
I have used both hoists over the years.
I do like the e-hoist because I have the up/down controls at my skun'n area and no extra steps to walk over to a hand crank mounted on a wall post. But Both hoists work great and peel critters like a bananna (like the above videos).

Renny, golf ball method leaves cord marks on Coon hides (rope burns). Use caution with rope & golf balls, goof ball.  ;D
Vice grips leave marks on flanks, but I haven't experience any down grading.

Ball method for coyotes.....  I don't know if I'll use it for coon unless I've got to do 30 a day.  I've been talking to ~ADC~ on Trapperman and might send for the vice grip setup he makes or make my own.  I built it so I have enough room to attach both systems but not sure how I'm going to do it yet.  When I have everything in my hands I'll figure her out..........
