Title: Whistle pig season
Post by: bigben on February 14, 2011, 07:43:25 PM
So with fur season wrapping up pretty directly there is another season many that hunt predators also take part in.  And that's ground hogs.  This morning at 7 when I was on my way home I noticed that there was a groundhog out in the field eating grass.  Then on the way home there was one in the field close to home.  So who is ready to fling some lead at some whistle pigs?

I'm ready for groundhogs and ready for some nicer weather...I have a TC Encore pistol in 22-250.  I've got it dead on at 200 yds.  I really can't wait.

I want to do some experimentation with 20 grain HP 17 cal.. Now not 20 Grain Vmax.. 20 Grain HP that is available from Midway...
Now the chucks would be a good start to see what the little 20 grain HP does to them..Might decide to change the bullet in my fox gun for next year from 25 grainer to a 20 grain HP..  I could see myself sometime in March out there hunting chucks and using the E. Wilson shooting rest.

You better get the heck out there this year, some people kinda like the name Ground Hog King. But maybe it is just the King part of the name they like. But why tell you that, you remember how it can be with a robe and crown on waveing to people up and down main street.

Leglifter,
The first "king" got a trophy and he still has it.  ::) As for the other stuff,robe.....a stained sheet,crown...burger king repo'd it, and the scepter.....some "jackwagon" swiped it and used it for a shoot'n stick. ;D I guess you're gonna have to make your own outfit. I got the king sunglasses, although "lil goose" though that they were gay when I wore them to the expo. (a real chip off the "old" crock.........er block !!!!!!! ;))

Hey Leglifter....Long tail had to go to "Omar the tent maker" for the robe to be made.. :D...and the stains he put on it are questionable to say the least.. :o.."Lil Goose" did say that he wasn't making a fashion statement with those glasses... ::)

yeah yeah I noticed that,
I didn't want to respond to it and discourage the young lad.

Goose, I'm sure I have an old boat tarp around here that I can whip into a fine robe

We have to create a groundhog event at the next meeting...maybe a ground hog "king" outfit competition, best style wins, via picture and post on site.....?

Critterslayer....they haven't made a camera that could take a picture of some of these guys!!! :D...they just don't hold up!!! :P..they go to pieces...some have been know to try and sneak up on a mud puddle to get a look at themselves....but the puddle usually dries up when that happens... :o

i got one today. big male. i usually don't shoot em now cause of the breeding but it was in my back yard and i had a 17hmr 20gr xtp bullet with its name on it lol. ive seen a few around in cut corn fields  while walking but never got closer'n 150+ and  i was ganna have to just shoot freehand with the bullbarreld 17 lol. i'm a good shot but not that good lol. come summer thats all i do is get them whistlers. i might try to save up bits of their meat for fox bait in a whole but idk if i wanna screw with em that much but its always good when you can utalize the whole kill.

I reloaded test batches of 8 each of the Combine Tech 50 grain Silver tips for a Savage 223 Edge and the Savage 24V 223/12.  I have about 120 rounds with 14 different powders.  Once the wind settles down.....Ya right in March!!!!!!!I will go out and see which powder shots best for both guns.. Planning on sighting them on paper with some factory rounds  I have and then start to fire groups of 4 shots for each gun to see which group the best... Going to use the E. Wilson rest too.. No more of that shooting at a club for me...Money I saved by not joining there help pay for some of the rest..Club shooting... some of those guys are sure not safe with the guns on the firing line.. Just can't relax there and shoot my guns in like I want too.  So once the 223's are sighted in I will have to try the them on chucks too....

I won't kill one until their young are no longer relying on them for food and care.  Probably start in May.

Goose,
Na, HE was a leftover from last year. I played "tag" with him on a few occasions. The hole was at a hard spot to get a good shot at but I caught him running from another hole. The dummy just had to stick his little nugget up one time to many. ;D I'm just hit'n the hard spots now cause when the grass starts grow'n game over till they cut hay. Not to mention, MAY is kind of a wash with the turkey hunt'n this year. >:(

Supposed to be pretty chilly for the next few days. Might get a chance to test my artisic skills paint'n the snow. ;D This weather is really goofy. ???
Note~ males are run'n from hole to hole and the females are build'n nests. They ain't in one spot for too long.
