I am looking for a lightweight headlight for a youth hunter.I like the idea of LEDs with there lower battery requirements and long burn times But am concerned about there ability to show eyes.I have played around with some inexpensive LEDs and they seem to light up a large area but not very intense.Other requirements would be availability of parts if needed,durable construction,red lens,
burn time of 8 hours or more all for $100.00 give or take.Any input or experiences would be appreciated.

Foxtrot, talk to Trophiesonly about lights. He can tell you how to build a very bright light for only a few bucks.

I would be interested to hear what he has to say.I quess what I'm really curious about is if the predators act any differently when using LED.

If they are to bright it will scare them away........LED white lights will scare red fox away fast....
Remington makes a nice head light that has a lens that drops down and becomes a red filtered light...It all depends on what kind of gun you use too...Rifles I like to put a hood on a head light so the light shoots over the scope and you do not get glare down your barrel.
Shotgunning one of those cheap head lights with the strap you find by the check out in Homedepot or Lowes is all you need. By the way that is where you will find that Remington light that I speak of..It was about ....$26.00...Red Lens pops down and lights a arc across your entire area.. You do not have to turn your head light when you shoot...
LED might be OK but you have to have a red filter on it...You shoot that into a red fox eyes the hunt is over..Remember too you can get Red Dykem and paint a white lens red too.....

If you have a Grainger near you. They should have it in stock for like $8.

Yu can purchase RED Dykem on line too...Remember to get the red. It comes in blue too......Make sure you give the white light about two to three coats of the dykem.

good heavy duty ray o vac 2 red bulb 1 white led headlamps are 8 dollars and super durable.we use those for just on stand but the white led in it is plenty bright for walking in and out to stands.

go down to the nightblaster 1000,buy a 6 volt recargeable,battery and you can have a good light for 3200 dollars at most the lamp cover comes off the front,and you can put red dj paper in it,that way you can take it out and use the white beam for tracking if necessary.

I used a combination of a Energizer 6-LED Headlight ($15) and a 3-watt Rayovac Sportsman Xtreme flashlight ($25) with push button on the back. Wear the headlight on and tape the flashlight to the gun with vet wrap.
I still sometimes use my old Nite Lite coon hunting setup for long nights, but this is a lot easier

TJ are sucess rate zoomed using the dim leds on stand,how about yours,and those yes shine awful bright for a small headlamp.
i had that exact one,for 3 years it may have been a 3 led though,the rayovac,is built just as good,the red may be a little brighter but theres 2 red lights,nobody has mistaken them for a set of eyes yet,but im worth far more dead han alive,thats sure terrible...lol

TO, success on reds seemed to go up. On greys, I didn't really see much difference. Once they commit, they usually come right to the gun.

i think many hunters use to bright a light,i take the six volt incase i need it,but most of the time these work fine and are nice and light.
i make my own gun lights i buy a 6 volt lantern,a rechargeable spring battery,mount a weaver base on the bottom of the light and turn a upside down weaver ring on the scope,no wires,and if you get a good lantern they come on every time.once in probably 300 times out we burnt a bulb.
and the no wires is great,i sold all the ones i had to use wires with they were a pain.

are you using red lenses in these led lights? or are you letting them go?

they come made in them ben they may have 3 to 5 led lights,mine is 3 led,2 are red,1 is white.
then it has a zenon on top so if need to see way out there i got a powerfull tight beam that lights up to 200 yards.
here is the on i got the white and red led are in the bottom square the round top light is kripton it is bright and tight.
they are 8 dollars at big lots.
