Title: State game lands
Post by: Tom Stohler on February 29, 2016, 12:53:03 PM
Yesterday I headed to some sgl close by me got there bright and early wanted to see if I could find any coyotes and practice my calling well I got there about a half hour before sunrise to find people were already there getting ready to take a hike  nexted parking lot mountain bikers were there none of them hunted I talked to them most of them couldn't believe I was looking for coyotes. My question is do you think everyone who uses our sgl should pay in some kinda way just like we do???

I use to think that but then someone said, if you make them pay then they will have a voice and possibly try and change things...

State game trails law... primary use is hunting all else is secondary...which means these people put there lives in jeopardy each time they want to take a nature hike without any orange on whatsoever! Just me here maybe.... but with all the other places designed strictly for "hiking" I would be using them instead...
I don't like to be shot at!!!!

I'm a mountain biker and have never attempted to bike on SGL.  It sounds a little risky. You never know who's hunting what and when....  :o :o :o

There was talk to make them pay a fee for hiking, horseback riding ect. Kinda went quiet in the past year. We don't want them having a voice or some tree hugger seeing a deer being field dressed.  They were bought with our money, the hunters! I've called in a few dogs on gamelands and they were people's pets as they were walking them unleashed and had there nose on my decoy.  Also had the nerve to ask me what I was doing there since deer season was over.

Lot of uneducated people out there that think when deer season is over..hunting is over till next season. Fee or no fee I don't want someone walking a trail while I'm hunting dogs and they are stupid enough to walk there dog unleashed. Then I'm "the idiot cause I was hunting where I was supposed to be." You wanna hike walk, etc. use areas designated for that not sgl.

We don't have SGL but what we have is State Trust Land.  Considered private property by the state but entrance allowed with the purchase of a hunting license.  Works out pretty good.

P.S.  Scott did you ever get my PM?

Along time ago when my boys were 6&8 we were calling on sgl during the day two dogs a rotweller and a big mutt came in and I mean right in and they weren't very friendly. It could have put me in a really bad situation I had the gun on them the whole time. Heard someone calling there dogs. I hollard to them and I kinda made my point very clear.  Yes dogs should be on a leash.

I've already had a shot taken at me when I was howling because they "thought" I was a coyote. Couple on a quad...needless to say I yelled some choice words that made them think twice. I was in full camo so they had no idea where I was but I knew exactly where they were. I got up left then as I was leaving and the real song dogs started up. We'll that quad started up and got the hell out. Hahaha I just laughed..

Wonder what the time frame is for people to be riding bikes on the Pa Game Lands.?  I know if they have any kind of motor on it they aren't allowed to ride them... I have been busted a few times by people riding mountain bikes  on the same trails I have been hunting coyotes on ... Yes I have called in people in the daytime.  You know what time I hunt the PGL and the State Park hunting areas... 2-4 AM...plus there be red fox, gray fox, coon, and coyotes there too.

PAGOOSE hunter... I was hunting the PGL at Carlisle for Mosquito Creek..   2:30 AM... I agree with you... Nothing but dog **** all around the spot you walk around the gate... I was lucky I missed every pile... BUT  I did feel like it was a MINE FIELD.  My Son pointed it out to me too... I didn't see it on my way in.. :)  If I step in sheeeeeeeeeeet let it be Coyote  sheeeeeeeeeeeeet not boxer or german shepard!!!!!  Stinky Gravy Train on the bottom of the boot just ain't right!!!!!!

Also there is a time frame when you can let dogs run free in our state... Wish the PGC would fine these people that allow their dogs to run without a leash when wildlife are deemed to have their young...  It something like March to July  1 that dogs can't be trained.  Anyone know the window when dogs can't run in Penns Woods or Fields?

I have Elmer Fudd come looking for me when hunting in the daytime for coyotes... Many of you know that I have now programed my FX5 and my ICOtec GC 500 to play Randy Anderson playing the bugle.  Taps, Calvary Charge, and Revele!   On the FX5 I actually have Alabama singing the Star Spangle Banner and of course Randy Anderson favorite.. Come Here Little Coyote !   So when those Fudds come looking for that coyote that is really me?  You should see the look on their face when all of the clar blue they here a bugle and it's Randy play TAPS!!!!   It Be Funny!!!!!

when walking my dogs in an area like that I let them off the leash, my dogs are fully trained and listen to me 100% of the time.   If they didn't I wouldn't let them off the leash.   I have had bikers, horseback rider, quad riders, hikers, and neighbors walk into my sets when calling during the day..

I was calling once on private land when a home owner across the street shot a shotgun over the top of our heads, I guess he was trying to scare away whatever was killing the grey fox pup.   I got in the car went over to his house and asked him why in the world he just shot toward us.. (not that nice though).   I was hot.   I went back the next day and spoke to him, he said he though there were bears or coyotes killing a deer so he wanted to scare them away.    I haven't had a problem since at that property..

:) Page 20..Hunting and Trapping Digest spells it out  :) Take cell phone pictures, people, vehicle license plates, bikes. If it upsets you that much be prepared to turn them in and then be a witness for the WCO if necessary  :) There's even a little coupon provided for writing down infractions.  ;D Anyone who see's a quad, dirt bike etc. needs to let the WCO know where and when he saw this  :) these fools often repeat this at the same time and day because of their schedules.  :D Get involved  :).......................JMO........... 8)

Good point jasper1! Time to make people start obiding by the rules. I'm so sick of seeing sgl signs that say no motorized vehicles beyond this point. Then you walk in and it's nothing but quad tracks. Without rules we have a free for all. Which helps no one. It's unfortunate that some think they are above rules.
First rule of hunting ALWAYS IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET BEFORE SHOOTING.
