Post by: Pa Goosehntr on February 24, 2016, 11:30:37 AM
??? ??? ??? Ya know with the way topics are popping up on the boards  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? I'm surprised that someone hasn't said they use a drone to scout for coyotes.. :o :o :o :o Illegal to use for hunting...but what about scouting? I thought about it but...it just takes away from the hunt in my opinion. I'm sure it would work great too...just not that desperate to find coyotes that way. I would rather go on foot. Plus it's forced exercise lol

For the price of a good drone I could buy another rifle.

Drones are cool.
Nephew and I used one since early December to scout for remote Beaver activity. Looked on google earth, found likely spots, then flew drone to check it out and looked for dams & cuttings. Saved time and leg work. Final scouting was done with boots on the ground.
Spotting or seeing Fox, Coyote or Bobcat is not what we use drone to do.

Years ago, every few years I would go in friends small airplane to scout properties. He flew me over my trapline. When I ask him, he circled back or went down for closer look.
I took notebook and camera. I recorded good locations for Fox trapping, interconnecting Mink streams and looked over some Beaver spots. This was important information to me as I expanded my line and territory plus looked in neighboring counties. These flights were real time saver for sure.
This time frame was before personal computers, and modern maps of today.

So I used drone for scouting as I did with a local airplane ride years ago.
shoot me, hang me, beat me up

Lol... No need to beat you up Hern. I agree that it's a great tool and time saver. It's just not for me. I guess I'm just old school about some things.

Use Drones... Next thing we will want to use Tomahawk Missile  and blow up  coyotes from basement launch??? Just joking of course.. Drones if the Border Patrol and the U. S. Coat Guard are using them why not hunter.. I would hope our PGC would use them...I have no problem with Uncle watching me...

In a wide open low tree area flying it over/up a draw I think may show hiding/resting spots......... four legged critters that is CJ  ::) ::) ::) ::) but here in Pa, I think the trees would be like Charlie Brown's kite flying...always in the trees.. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

I know nothing about drones, but I would think it would take a pretty expensive one be good enough to fly out very far.  Are you actually sending it up the hollow or just getting a birds eye view when your there?

Bird's eye view, TJ. Like having a scout ahead of us. We certainly weren't trying to get a head count. Just looking for Beaver dams or downed tress.
Nephew has a neat thing there, so were put it to work. I have no practical use for a drone. But it was a neat experience.

Do get a decent drone...one that u can actually hover in the air with and take quality video. Your looking at 500$ +....that's if u wanna be able to actually get benefit from one and not just fly.
Nothing beats boots on the ground!

Thanks Hern

Don't see me buying one anytime soon, but I think they would be a lot of fun and handy in that instance.  Some of those dams are tough to get into
