How much does anyone practice calling?? I know when I was duck and goose calling I practiced everyday I'm using diaphragm calls definitely takes some practice
-
It's funny that you ask this question Tom. I'm also looking to start practicing. I just need some audio of the different sounds so that I can learn the difference between them.
-
It would be kinda cool to get together and practice.
-
Sounds like the beginning of the "bunny blues band" :) Lol... Tom, I applaud you for your patience and persistence with diaphragm calls. I've tried them for turkey and I can't use them. They make me want to gag! Lol... Just couldn't get over that no matter how much I tried.
-
I just started using a diaphragm howler about a week ago I picked it up. Tell you what once you get it down the sound is unmatched in my opinion. I won't even be bringing the electronic along anymore. The realism behind the diaphragm can't be beat
-
Completely agree with you R.F. Diaphragm's are the best sounding calls. I wish I could use them....
-
Foxhound did you try cutting the tape down.
-
Rookie what kind of diaphrams are you using
-
I use to practice a lot... However what happens is when you start to use electronics you see what all the coyote vocals somewhat sound like... It is very simple going from a Coyote invitational howl to a coyote challenge... Just a couple barks and a drawn out long how is the invitational howl.. While two barks and a short howl is the challenge.. Using a higher pitch sound is the female and a lower pitch is the male... The Primos Lil Dogs are open reed calls that are easy for beginners to do the sounds on easier.. Now you go to the Primos Hotdog or a Red Desert Howler and that be a bit tougher for a beginner to master. Learn how to do the following and you will be able to call in coyotes:
Coyote Interrogation Howl... Just a long drawn out howl with no barks!
Male and the female invitational howl... Two barks and a long drawn out howl!
Male and female challenge howl... Two barks and short howl!
KIYI adult and pup.. Sounds like all heck has broken loose.. The sound of a dog that got hit by a car..
Puppy distress...
All of these can be done easy on the Primos LIL Dogs open reed calls.. Now get in your other room and drive you wife and girlfriends nuts... Didn't take long before I would hear from the other room" '' CAN YOU GO DOWN STAIR IN THE RECROOM AND DO THAT?!!!!!''

:) "Buckwheat" showed me a trick and didn't even know it ;D ;D While showing me how to use his open reed caller in downtown,Renovo :o We listened to the calls echoing back to us from the buildings. ;D Very easy to distinguish the sounds ;D so when I got home I found a location where I could call at a ridge that echoed the sounds back at me ;D Worked much better than trying to practice in close quarters, like the man cave :P where my ears couldn't quite get it :-[ :-[ and the CEO and cat weren't all that appreciative >:( >:(.....Don't know if this helps or not or maybe you already do this or something similar :) :)...................... 8)

Tom I'm using the primos double reed and the sonic boom howler....finally got the hang of it

Question for everyone....is it normal not to hear coyotes howl back at you during the day in places you know they are? Seems I only hear them howl right before the sun fully sets.
-
I've had them howel back in the day time quite often.
-
Hmmmm....not sure then. Maybe they had me made before I started howling
-
I've had them howl back in the daytime also.

I have been practicing for over 30 years and continue to practice. Here is a tip I never told anyone "super secret" Lol. That's an inside joke. Master your turkey calling with diaphragms first. You will find it easier to transition to coyote and predator sounds. You will find it easier also if you can shape the call to your pallet. Everybody's is different. Things to try: Smaller frame, Thick tape, Thin Tape, Bending the frame. You will go through a lot of calls until you find the correct recipe. The tape has to seal around the roof of your mouth. Place the call as far back as possible as it will take less air and mouth/tongue movement to get the desired sounds. Most guys place the call too far front and blow way too hard. This often results in vibrating lips. You ever hear some say my lips tickle or go numb when I use a diaphragm? That's why. It is not back far enough. I could go on forever but you get the idea. Then practice a lot. Never stop.

I be one of these Gag Me To The Max! Thank you L4F I will have to try it at least.. Now this should have only been told across the table at the Yankee Doodle... That's were all the seasoned predator caller open up and spill the beans.. .Um maybe Jasper friend that owns the place might place truth serum the eggs and or pancakes.. Yep he does!!!! :) :)
