When out today with my coyote partner...we did alittle scouting hopeing to cut some tracks...we actually cut three different coyotes in the same area...im sure it's the alpha male and female and a 1.5 year old female pup...we found scat and urine from 2 different females....we were pretty fired up and planning a strategy....the wind has to be perfect...or a nice cross wind....we were lucky today ssw wind on our approach and the snow was soft...Coyote den is on the east side of the field and their useing it and not useing the edge to go to it.....their actually circling to the north and south and making a loop on their approach to their den...I thought that was pretty interesting.Rusty
-
Not trying to start an argument here, just need some information. I been calling and killing coyotes for well over fifty-five years and never been able to distinguish scat and urine from males or females or if it was from different coyotes. Also the precise age and sex of a 1.5 year old female pup. How did you come to this conclusion?
-
Well I determine the female urine pattern was in circle pattern ,where the females squat and the males are ideally strung out in the snow from hacking their legs....just a guess....im no expert...but that's what im guessing...as for the scat can never tell..just seen enough of it to know it's coyote. As for the 1.5 I'm guessing it's one of the females the were born last year...how do I know this...?Ive been watching these coyotes for some years...ive observed these 2 females squatting and peeing in the wild...I can also say that the alpha pair has let them in their territory...Ive seen them around this dairy farm alot....ive called them both in on late nights, but couldn't close the deal...Ive gotten pictures of the alphas...but not the pups...im not a expert.....just my observations.Rusty
-
Alpha male....he's an old boy....the dates are incorrect they were taken 3 years ago...Rusty
-
Alpha female,if you look at her closely...you can tell shes female ;)
-
Damn good reasoning on the urine and you would probably be right the majority of the time. Although most of the males I have witnessed will lift their leg and not move, leaves a circular pattern also. Scat, guess you got a fifty - fifty chance. As to age - no way of knowing until you have them on the ground. Curious to the timestamps, AM or PM?
-
Well....this pair was moving at dark during summer....after 7pm..their howling activity was 9 to 10 pm....but was known to howl earlier in the fall..how do I know...I also bowhunt the 3 connecting farms and observed that also....and my cousin kept bugging me to hunt it....and I did....got shots twice at them..but didn't close the deal....it wasnt till last year,i found the den (holding area) ,other hunters telling me their observations and so I went in and found it....but stayed away from it....didn't want to blow them outta there till,i had a good shot at them,so thats when I did some recon yesterday with a friend and found out alot...im going to put the trail cams back out and try to perfect my next move....up and personal..Here's another im after..she's a pretty female(squatter)....time and date are good on this picture

Male....check the time out...

Well went scouting today picked hit 3 spots that I knew were good coyote areas from word of mouth. Picked up on 2 sets of tracks at each stand. Was just too windy today to pull anything out. My morning stand I had several routes of tracks. I howled like crazy this morning but they didn't want to respond back or come out. I'm guessing even they didn't want to be out in these high winds. Another day....
-
Watch with your howling that you are not sounding too aggressive.... ??? ??? ???
-
I use an open reed call and generally just do pup barks and howls. I used a coyote decoy I have as well along with gland lure and dazed dog for scent cover. Maybe next time I have to bring some KFC with me . I'm so hungry for my first yote!!!

Coyote & Rattlesnake tastes like Chicken.:)
-
;D ;D ;D ;D Hern, you would know!! :o :o :o :o :o I do agree with the rattlesnake taste..
-
You are both crazy! I eat snake every year and it does not taste like chicken. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( Actually I don't think it has any taste at all unless you season it. I will agree the meat texture is like chicken.
-
Living in prime rattlesnake country I have had my share of rattlesnake. Until one morning while tending to the horses I heard some rustling in the straw. Went over to take a look and saw a rattlesnake swallowing a rather large packrat. Have not eaten a rattlesnake since!

So you guys hijack threads often.... It would be nice to add something to the thread instead of something completely out of text...not ragging just saying....lol

P53 says: "So you guys hijack threads often" >:( >:(....... >:( Personally I hate "Hijackers" >:( I say BAN "Hijackers" the scourge of any Thread! :P :P They take over and a Thread with one post and certain death ::) get's all blown out of proportion with 5 pages of "Nonsense" with a smattering of advice ??? ??? So in an attempt to get this Thread back on track ;) ;) I say watch out for SNAKES, when you go Coyote Scouting Today ::) or any day for that matter :P .......also if you find Rattlesnake "GUTZ" either LookN4aSaltShaker was there ahead of you >:( or a Coyote was defending it's den. :o :o :o :o........................ ;D............. 8) I think the snake meter was at low at the Park today..to cold 12degrees....but coyotes were looking for a meal.....just sayin......

P53 states-
It would be nice to add something to the thread...
I hate to scout or call when rattlesnakes are still out.
Having said that, your scouting pictures appear from the summer or early season. You seem to think the same pair are still there. How can you confirm this?
How do you know this pair wasn't trapped, called and killed, road killed, moved to another zip code and umpteen other things? Just saying.
It's been a week since you said you were hanging more trail cams. Did you do that? Have you checked card yet?
-
I had a place before deer season that had a least 6 different coyotes, once deer season hit they haven't been there, either pushed out by hunter or shot during the season... they still haven't been back as of 2 weeks ago. going to check again this week...
-
scott, after Deer season this year we had good trapping weather. I know alot of guys continued to trap Coyote. Plus Cable Restraint season came in after Deer season and some guys do well hanging cables.
Not to mention the Coyote houndsmen are out in full force and the ever present Predator Callers.
Plus, there has been several Coyote Contests since Deer season, throughout the state.
Not sure is any of this applies to your area.
This time of year, has the lowest Coyote density.
But not to say we can't kill 'em, if you know where they are, NOW. That's the hard part.

Love that picture John. I would be in heaven! Of course while I was scouting for coyotes. ;D ;D

Thanks and of course you would be scouting for coyotes, what else would you be scouting for? I had a reply for P53 but it must of been too controversial as it got deleted almost as soon as it was posted. Guess I'm the resident bad guy.
A few thin skinned, humorless guys around here.

I'm assumming they are the same pair,by the times Ive scounted and hunted this small farm...I took down my 4 trail cams from that little farm after bow season.I've seen the one female coyote just last week on a night hunt...160 yards would nt commit and i was carry a 22 mag. This farm gets no pressure. Second Farm where we were scouting there's 4 coyotes living there...one male(He hacks his legs) 3 females( have seen squatting aleast once and seen other signs,i'm assumming their females...I'm also asumming their females, because no male's going to let other males on his territory...I'm asumming once again they are the litter mates from last year..How do i know watched them during the summer and they also approached my setup a month ago in the same area...The Alpha pair has a (den..holding area what every you want to call it and has been useing it for aslong as i know...I'm putting out the trail cams hopefully on Sunday let you know, how i do.....hopefully i answered some of your questions...Rusty
-
Ahhh...John not thin skinned...I'm far from it....if you knew me you would never make that comment...just did'nt think hijacking the thread and adding snakes into it made any sense when we're in the winter time...but i'll watch out for the snow snakes...thanks for being concerned...Rusty
-
If I'm not mistaken there were three maybe four comments about rattlesnakes prior to my comment and picture. Maybe a couple after it also. If'n you are the guy that deleted it I stand by what I said - thin skinned and humorless.
-
Hey John your aloud to voice your opinion.....but remember opinions are like (-------s) everybody has one...Rusty
-
Anyone gonna try their luck in tomorrows arctic Temps? Just curious
-
Im passing on tomorrow, because of the wind....might go out tonight or Sunday afternoon...
-
My thoughts exactly about tomorrow. Gonna be too windy and cold for them to come out. Ill probably go Sunday. Maybe do some more scouting tomorrow.

:) " once deer season hit they haven't been there, either pushed out by hunter or shot during the season... " :( I had dinner last night with landowner where I had my trail Cam in the fall. ;D Captured 2 coyotes frequenting this woodlot. ;D always a go to place, he told me last night he hasn't seen or heard any since back in the fall :( although he has two Red foxes running up and down his driveway on a regular basis. ;D ;D Being shot by the local RidgeRunners ::) is a distinct possibility around here, due to the tight quarters. :P Also some of the landowners are carrying a rifle while doing chores, cutting wood and pop a few inattentive one's. :P :P I always hit the spots that held them before ;) something about the area attracted them, so it's likely in my opinion that others will follow suit............... 8)

that's gonna depend how badly they've killed out the food base last time any were there...
-
I've seen areas where new coyotes have moved in after the ones there were killed off. I think it all comes down to habitat. If it meets all their needs, including available prey, I believe new ones are sure to move in.
-
:o :o :o ??? ??? ??? ??? I have a question for you all :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ why aren't the folks working at the landfills complaining/talking about coyotes running rampant?? plenty of food ??? ??? ??? ??? and almost always plenty of cover nearby... 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
You bring up a very good point Goose. A guy I work with lives near a landfill. He's friends with the owners and hunts their property during deer season. He sees coyote sign all over the place. It's posted property and sees VERY little pressure. I'm guessing the people that work at the landfills don't see any coyotes because they avoid the area while they are open and hear equipment running. I imagine that after hours the coyotes scrounge around for that free meal.
-
Question for you fellas. ...where is a good area to start scouting when hunting game lands for coyote? Thanks in advance
-
Thick nasty areas. Rocky hillsides.
-
Ok thanks that's were I'll start. The places that look like perfect spots have no signs. Down jim thorpe area they have a lot of huge rock mountains. Perfect den setups but no signs of dogs. Too many tourists in the area I guess. From what I read they won't use anything that's been trampled on by humans....
