Title: coyote down
Post by: QUATTRO on September 22, 2015, 11:47:03 PM
Thought I would share this story since it might fit into a couple topics that popped up here recently. One dealt with the use of vocals and the other with caliber/bullet choice.

I went to a familiar spot with my buddy that we have called in the past and never was able to have any luck at. There are definitely coyotes around no question about that though. After setting the call out, we found our  spots and sat quiet for a few. I started the stand off with a series of female lone howls. Within seconds we had a deep series of howls reply back. Sounded like a male and he wasn't too far off. Several hundred yards directly in front of our position. Wind was perfect as it was blowing directly in our faces. As pointed out by Hern I believe, in the recent post on the use on vocals, I tried my best to reply according to what I was hearing. At the same time, not over doing it. This continued back and forth for a bit and then he failed to respond and he went silent. The silence came after I switched from the various lone howls to coyote pair howls and yips. I thought since he wasn't responding or showing up for what seemed like an eternity, perhaps it might have gotten intimidated by the pair vocals or like my buddy and I's  last experience, which began very similar to this and ended with his first coyote, it was making its way closer. So I just kept scanning and low and behold here comes eyes. It weaved its way in slowly stopping and sniffing here and there..as it started to get "in range" I lip squeaked it to about 80 yds and dropped the hammer as it stood quartering toward me.. DRT. Pertaining to the thread about caliber and bullet choice as it relates to fur damage, for what its worth, this critter was hit with a 55gr Vmax from a 22-250..very little damage at all on a frontal shot at about 80 yards. Thanks for letting me share.
