Title: Avian Flu
Post by: QUATTRO on August 08, 2015, 08:05:26 AM
Picked up a nice farm a few weeks ago and while I was there  getting the run down on the place, the owner mentioned that when the avian influenza hits, it would most likely put a stop to hunting activities due to the fact that he also has chickens and he would need to protect his bio security.. Its a sad situation all around..of course it will be tough to lose a promising property but more so a sad situation for the people that will have their livelihoods affected. Yesterday morning I grabbed an outdoor news and I saw an article on the front about it..really has me wondering how many of the chicken and turkey farmers I know will be dealing with this problem and how many farms will be off the list this season...because from what I have learned it's not a question of "if" but "when"..anyone else running into similar dealings?

Excuse my ignorance, but how does the avian flu tie in with hunting?  If a farm test positive for avian flu is it then quarantined?

CoyoteJohn, this was all news to me...I have heard of it, but never made a connection between it and hunting either..Basically the farmer put it to me like this..when the avian flu is confirmed here, brought by ducks and geese traveling the flyway, I would first not be allowed to hunt another bird farm and then come onto his property for fear of cross contamination since it can be carried in fecal matter, saliva, urine etc..all of which can be transported on my boots from the fields. If his farm is impacted directly, you hit the nail on the head, his farm is under quarantine..which in his words would put a halt to hunting it. He did mention it can pass. They can spray the birds down with a foam of some sort to cleanse them (I assume) and heat the chicken houses up to a certain temperature and kill the virus. His biggest thing was it is also an airborne pathogen which makes it a real pain. This is the first time I heard it mentioned by a farmer here. I usually make my rounds in the coming weeks to pop in and chat with some of the property owners and farmers and touch base with them prior to the season.. several of which raise chicken and turkey. I suppose then I will hear what their concerns will be. In the end, its not about me losing some spots, a few of which I really covet, but about how this will affect them.. for their sake, hopefully not too bad.

You may luck out.  It has not been reported in the Atlantic flyway - as of yet.

I hope your right too! I don't need to deal with that, as I raise/breed chickens for my own use, and I hunt some turkey farms. Bio-security is a big deal when that stuff is floating around.

Well, that didn't take long..spoke with farmer tonight and they are shutting down any outside hunting on the farm. I have a week to get my trail cam and was told to give him a shout next spring..this spot had a lot of potential..we jumped a coyote 15 mins after getting permission while doing a "walk around" and had pics on cam..hope this isn't sign of things to come..

Self imposed or government ordered?

Self imposed or government ordered?

Good question. He told me that he got a visit from a woman who was there to perhaps advise him or inspect his premises. I didn't catch that part or the title he gave her since we were both still working at the time and having a hurried phone conversation. Whether she is from the company he is raising the birds for, there because he called her in himself or she's from the government, I have no clue. But in his own words he said "they are really looking to tighten the screws" ...I do not know the inner workings of being a bird farmer so I have no clue really.. I am going there tomorrow and will probably find out more then.

what are your possibilities of getting on the next property over?... coyotes don't care about property lines...

Hey Dale, that house across the street from us sold, $250,000.  You should have bought it.  Did you ever post them "selfies"?

I thinks any health entity, Fed, State, County can quarantine it but mostly it will come from the direction of the CDC and/or USDA.   If it was government imposed it should have signs posted around his property.

You are correct, they definitely don't care. When I go out seeking permissions, whether someone says "no" or "yes" ..its on to the neighbors regardless...but that is not a possibility here and that is also the real perk to this place. It is bordered pretty much on all sides by land that is owned by a trust. All of which is largely undisturbed land and hunting there is restricted ..not to mention it was the perfect blend of everything you would want a property to have..so unfortunately, there are no immediate neighbors to ask. I have other farms and properties in the area but none I would consider close. Will losing it make or break having a "good" season?...No. There are plenty of other places I have to hunt. This one was just one of those properties that when I scored it, I knew I had something unique. I will be over there this afternoon and see whats what.

as my partner used to say " it all turns into public land after midnight"...

just to add a bit of info on the avian flu...

when it's detected in an area and they issue quarantine recommendations, all contact with any other bird farmers is done with, none at all...

the feed trucks are disinfected between each load of food they deliver as to not spread the disease...

workers are disinfected and wear disposable coveralls, boot covers, gloves etc... a lot of times they will live in/on the property to keep from being infected by other sources...

any visitors, family etc, are kept away from the houses so as not to spread any disease...

they take this very serious as any infection causes the loss of the whole populations of birds on the property plus the clean up costs...

John, no I haven't posted any of them... I'm sorry for my laxness, I'll get on it soon...

Well, however tempting, I can't say I follow that same belief...never felt I had the need to..

I did talk to the farmer and I'm under the impression it is more or less a self imposed ban they are implementing. He said they raise broilers so the risk for them is minimized a bit because of the quicker turn over but the bottom line remains..I'm off there til next spring.
