That's impressive!!
-
Thanks. The catch ratio will slow in a few days.
Did get out 4 more dozen traps today for this farmer.
Also had a Skunk and a Possum today.
On another note,
6 Groundhogs were coming out the hole and 10 were going in the hole. I think most folks think you always catch 'em coming out the den hole.
-
That should put a dent in the hog population!!
-
Wow! What a catch!!

Awesome catch Hern!

Very Nice!!! 8)

For now.
After years of trapping the same holes, population has stabilized. Usually the same den holes year in, year out, even some ole dens not being used.
Seeing how this is a big time produce grower operation property, I see where young plants are nipped off shorty after planting by Groundhogs. Then as produce ripens, Groundhogs and other animals eat the fruit or vegetables.

I think he has a groundhog problem! Lol. Nice work Hern.

Must be hot work
Hot, Knee high Ivy Poison, Bee's Nests, Snake or Two, Wire Fences of all types, Brush Piles, Rock Piles
Always, always carry a machete' for this work and marker flags...
Go look see in the Spring and marker flag your stops, record in notebook how many holes at this stop.
Go back in Summer to your flags, to set traps and you have a jungle.
Check notebook how many holes at this site, so you know how many traps and stake you need to carry. Cut & chop path (where did this Sumac come from?) to den holes.
Dang, they dug two more fresh holes. Back to the ATV and get more traps and stakes...LOL

Your realy doing the farmer a favor...I hope he knows what your up against....ED

He knows. Been getting Groundhogs off his fields for 19 consecutive years.
He pays well. Am not doing it for my health. I trap or hunt problem animals during the off season...it's for cash. It's as simple as that.
This farmer has a truck load of Honduras migrant workers in his fields picking fruits and vegetables. Those boys work their hind end off. I ride the ATV around to check traps and re-set then I'm gone. Not saying I have it easy, just saying I wouldn't trade 'em jobs... ;)

Hern,
What kind /size of traps do you use for groundhogs? Do you bait them?
-
Longhair,
Am using #160 conibears.
I have a variety of namebrands: Northwoods, Dukes, BMI's and such.
These are killer traps, set in each hole for large scale field work. No bait.
If I have a home owner that has a problem Groundhog in his garden or under his shed and I am not able to use a killer trap because of kids and pets, I will use a baited cage trap (live trap). I use Fox Ridge Mulberry paste bait in cage traps.

Thanks. ;) ;) Some of the hogs can be shot at, BUT, there is a bunch that is in a safety zone, close to roads and some that I can't line up a safe shot. My zero turn mower just isn't fast enough to run them down. :o :o Believe you me.......I've tried !!!! Gonna have to get a few of those traps to thin the herd. ;D ;D

;D ;D ;D ;D Longtail...don't get your lil finners caught in them :o :o :o 8) 8) 8)

Upon further review.......me thinks that some professional instruction would be much better than just OJT. ::) ::) ::) Got to find someone to teach this old dog some new tricks.........SAFELY !!!!!!!!! :o :o ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D Lead and live traps will work for now but I hope to be ready for spring. ;D ;D
