How many on this forum are registered in this hunt or have hunted it in the past if so did you weigh any in? Thought about registering but decided I need to be better at calling and killing them.
-
I didn't sign up for any hunts this year. Saving cash money for the honey.
-
I hunted that hunt for years,it is tough competing against the hounds men,I have seen them come in with a pile of coyotes,I haven't entered it for a couple years now,but it's still fun to get out.
-
This will be my fourth year in the hunt I've yet to weigh one in for this hunt. Changing tactics up this year tho. Gonna hunt from one side of Penna to the other at every spot I've seen or shot a yote. Hunting straight through with naps when needed. We shall see how it goes.
-
Cskypup good luck its going to be tough with all this snow hope you put some on the ground.
-
So-soshot grab a weapon and enjoy the outdoors. The other year I was 1 pound away from the big money, not by
skill, just because I went.
-
Absolutely enjoy just bein out in the woods putting fur down is a bonus! Every time I'm out I learn somethin new and add to my skill base. Nothin at all like that thrill of a predator runnin in to the call.....well there are a few close seconds but they're for a different forum lol
-
I to enjoy being out, be it hunting or just walking sun rise or set always better than wok or home chores. Be interesting to see how the hound hunters do this year I think most all of the state has 2FT or more snow on ground making hard going. I have one other question for any to answer it says all yots must be killed in PA. how do they know for sure?

Officials do not know. How could they know if it's a West Virginia, Ohio or New York Coyote.
That questions comes up every year.
It's up to the participants to abide by the rules.

They have wildlife biologists there and have the ability to dna test the winners. Also the polygraph will show deception to the degreeit ddisqualifies winners. Just fyi and my opinion.

From my experience they have never used either,Hern is right, whenever there is large amounts of money, there is no tellin were they got them from,I do know there is a fenced in place in NY it is full of coyote, you pay to train your dog,but for 100.00 each he will let you shoot all ya want..

I didn't know that. Thanks for the update, and that seems fair.
How do the biologists know the DNA of each state? That interests me...

P100x & Hern, The threat is there and the same weasels that would cheat here are those that would cheat in Bass contest or card games. I think that this is my 15th year in MC, haven't done anything but I will put on about 400 Mi. trying. Dick
-
DNA is not the end all be all for tests. PSU has a database as to our coyote pool here and other regions. Also they cqn take soil samples from th dirt on their feet which is a fairly easy means because soils are totally different content state to state region to region. Papa1 you're correct cheaters exist in every sport and will get caught eventually. I just hope to register my limit this year lol.
-
Cskypup,I hope you get a limit an one about 50lbs.I would like to see someone on here win.
-
I've got in the last 4 years. Never weighed on in. Got my fingers crossed.
-
Hey guys, DNA and Lab samples cost a lot. A good Polygraph man will nail your butt in a heart beat. Their only problem is prostitutes (read LAWYERS). But put them on the box and let all of us know about it. Shame on him if we see him in the woods. Dick
-
Yes both DNA and labs cost a f$&!ton but from my understanding in the past its been done by PSU srudents?? Then again I could be wrong or incorrect......my wife says I'm wrong at least ten times a day lol. Thanks Predator 100x! I'm going all out this year...bright side is I'll have three days when I'll be right cause my cell has no service up in the mtns hahaw!

That's crazy. How many times a hunt do they DNA or check soiled feet? Has it been done in the past?
How many times do they use a Polygraph?
For heaven sakes, to get soil samples from each township in Pennsylvania, that cost alone would be mind boggling for a hunting club. Wow. Plus DNA from each county and keep up on that data as new blood moves in and out of the state. Wow.
Would be interesting reading DNA data on our Pa. Coyote. Anyone know where I could fine this data?
Is this just hearsay or does MC really do that? (not trying to tick anyone off, just seems like a lot of money spend by a small club for safeguards)
-
I agree with papa1 that much wining payout will make some dishonest hunters do what ever to win especially if they got away with it before. I use to do a lot of bass tournament fishing some guys would cheat for a lot less money.
-

They do the polygraph for the top 3 prizes and maybe the heaviest female. I think this will be the 4th year for it. But the can make anyone take it. The first year one guy failed it but took it to court and won so they had to pay him because they didn't announce it or something like that. Guess who won it 2012 and got the heaviest female last year.
-
We were talkin about the hunt today at work, one thing is for sure, the guys that call may have a really good chance, with over 18 inches of snow an more on the way the hounds men will be in trouble.
-
Here we go heading up to prepare for midnight! Weather doesn't look the best but can't put fur down sitting on the couch!
-
Good Luck!

Good luck!
-
Best of luck to ya Cskypup.
-
Went out last night had them moving just could not get any to commit. Good luck and stay safe.
-
Just talked to two guys that are participating in the hunt....they hunted all last night and only saw one fox...they say the snow is still way deep and it's hard to get the truck back in off the main roads without getting stuck....they are headed for some down time before going out again...
-
Thanks your best wishes! Still no coyote down can hear em howling like crazy but no eyes.while.we're out....still.havin a great time.being out in da woods....good luck to Everyone for the !!!!!!! BE SAFE amd.always.watch your six!!!!.

Again another year without weighing one in grrr. Still had a great time and gotta say that lightening in the sky is always beautiful butnot safe to hunt in. Stopped and watched the weigh in at Mosquito Creek tho. Gotta say the houndsmen bring em in....one team brought in eight to weigh in. I don't wanna offend anyone but if your dogs chase while you're following along in a warm truck watching their gps signal how.....well anyone can guess what I'm tryin to say...different strokes and different folks I guess....hats offto anyone tthat weighed a dog in for the hunt! Conditions were tough for calling. I do know one thing this year I'll be going upstate for some greys next season!
-
I was there yesterday to from 3:PM-4:15PM 104 weighed in 44+lb was heaviest some saying weight was 5-8lbs less then other years, pretty cool all they do, check for this & that samples for biology studies. Sorry to here you had no luck there's always next year.

150 coyotes out of 4k hunters goes to show PA. is not over run with them. All the contests in my area the last 3 years has only had half or less total coyotes turned in from 8 to 10 years ago.
-
Are the yotes getting wise to the action?
-
Less deer = less coyotes. Since the deer herd numbers are being reduced, hunters are getting far less pictures on trail cams. Some would get 5 to 10 pictures before bow season are getting 1 to 3. We have a ton of callers out their at nights and very few connect. If hunting them made coyote rates grow the past 10 years Pa. should have as many as most western states, yet we do not, we have probably less then 6 years ago.

Weather has a lot to do with kills during any contest. This year, Lower kills in the MC contest showed that.
Coyote numbers and density vary in different parts of Pa.
Seems like ncPa. and wPa. Have a lot of hound hunters, trappers (and out of town folks visiting cabins) that take a lot of Coyote. From what I heard, some groups of hound hunters take 100+ Coyote a season.
When thesehere contest roll around, Coyote population is at the lowest of year and a Coyote still on it's feet has his PHD and Doctorate in survival.
By that, the local Coyotes know what a dirthole is, heard all the sounds for e-callers, know your hounds first name and pedigree and even can distinguish the sound of your pickup truck from your partners pickup truck.
Predator and Prey density do have cycles. If you live long enough and stay with it, one will see highs and lows in Coyote/Fox/Coon populations.
c h,
In my area, Coyote population has been stable. I see that with my traps and calling and ADC work, plus scouting 12 months a year.
You may live in mountain area where Deer is main food, but here in the central Susquehanna Valley, we have mountains, farm land, CRP land, Game Lands, private land...a wide variety of food source.
Am in contact with many Canine men throughout the state.
Seems right now, From Shippensburg (up Rt. 81) to near Mahanoy City (along Rt. 81), that Rt. 81 corridor on both sides, then east to Lehighton/Allentown area, that whole South East Corner on Pa...has a growth spurt of Coyotes. Even west of Mahanoy City, in the Mahantango Valley they are experiencing high Coyote population.
What I am trying to point out, Pa. has a healthy population of Coyote. Maybe not in your area.
There are so many things to factor when talking about animal density in a given county or township.
Pa. in not over run by Coyotes, just some areas of the state have a higher density.
-
I think the first place Coyote came from Montour County. Very near me.
Very stable area with a few pockets of high density Coyote.
These guys are consistence place winners in Coyote contests over the years.

I live and hunt the Kutztown area. My hunting buddy and I entered the port Clinton coyote, fox hunt because we have a healthy population of reds around us and its a 15 minute drive from my house. Also entered the mosquito creek hunt just because of the pay out and we know there are yotes around us just know where. The port Clinton hunt went all last week and the creek just the weekend. We hunted every night 7pm-2 or 3 in the morning and I get up for work at 5 yeah I was beat come Sunday. But Monday night we shot a 40 pound male yote took 1st at port Clinton then shot a couple fox biggest being 10.1 good enough for 4th at port Clinton. Then went out for yotes Friday night heard about 15-20 in all diffenent areas of this one farm we hunt called in a 35 pound male around midnight wanted to wait for the rest of the pack to come over the hill to us but this one got to 50 yards and couldn't wait any longer and that was our week of hunting made $430 in prize money not bad for a week of hunting.
-
We have a good many coyotes around here,I think it's do to a lot of posted property,an a lot of people that educate them very quickly.
-
Monday night we shot a 40 pound male yote took 1st at port Clinton then
Congratulations wfo204
-
We got a 37lb female at 9am I called it in with coaxer, didn't get top female though. Would have been nice.
-
Great job weighing one in! Still have a boatload to learn with coyote hunting but its comin along!
-
Thank you this was my first full predator season and I would stop hunting all other game just to hunt predators at night.

am with you on that, I guess I pretty much did that over the years. I do hunt Spring Gobbler.
-
wfo204... I didn't think were were yotes around Kutztown. Are you hunting close to the town or above 222 ?
-
There are more and more coming around both the yotes we got were just on the north side of 78. We know of a pack of 5 that are right outside of town along 222 but we didn't get shooting at them. Another guy I talked to found a den in the Kutztown game lands with 13 fawn carcasses in it so they are here.
